Advantages: stunning photography, makes you think Disadvantages: poor extras, too long for some people
...The Thin Red Line was the other war movie that came around the same time as Saving private Ryan and as a result wasn't as widely recieved. This is a shame as it's actually in many ways a better film.
It centres around soldiers at the conflict of Guadalcanal but is more about the personal struggles of the mind rather than the harsh brutalities of war. Men reflect on what they have left behind, fearing for their lives and wondering if they'll ever get back to their families again. Yes there are war scenes but this is more deep and personal. It also has stunning photography and great performances from a stellar cast of stars. Some may find it too long with not a lot happening. if this is the case then you need to find somethnig with a bit more action and less to think about.
The film is in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen on this disc...

Advantages: Good action at the beginning and end Disadvantages: Very unrealistic plot - which matters for a war film
...film, which tells the story of the battle of Guadalcanal. It is much more powerful and moving, and the whole cast is excellent, including big names like John Travolta and George Clooney who are each only in it for a few minutes. The film also gets very tense at sometimes, anad its only real fault is that nothing really happens at the end. Overall a much better film.
I would not recommend buying Saving Private Ryan, but it is worth watching, so renting it is a better option....

Advantages: Very realistic setting and true to era Disadvantages: A little on the gorey side
...This film is an all time epic - a must see! If you can stand the gore as Romans are slaughtered on the battlefield and in the arena you'll ove this film. A very moving plot with lots of high quality acting and emotion. A very touching tale that leaves you feeling amazed.
I feel that this film gives a reasonably accurate picture of life as a Roman soldier - the way the cities and arenas are generated is extremely impressive and the quality of it all will astound you. An excellent use of music and emotional appeal too....
