Battlefield - Famous Battles Of World War Two (Box Set)

...You really would. This film is wonderful, an excellent insight into wartime russia. It's based on the true story of sniper Vassili Zaitsev and his part in the war over Stalingrad during World War 2. Vasilli Zaitsev (Jude law) is a member of the Russian army, fighting at Stalingrad. He arrives, and has to go into the battlefield with only a set of bullets. He must get a rifle off one of the bodies. The battle is a massacre of the russians, and as soon as anyone tries to run away, they are shot by the russians themselves. Vassili Zaitsev is one of the two remaining people (the other is Joseph Fiennes) left on the battlefield, hiding within the bodies with another man. He gets a rifle and shoots five germans with exellent sniper skill without them knowing a thing. He gets promoted to sniper division and the rest carrys on from there, he... Read review

Advantages: Powerful account from a little known battle
Disadvantages: The human race still hasn't learnt

.... It was a battle that happened on part of the famous Siegfried Line as the German army began a counter attack that became synonymous with the Battle of the Bulge. The history of Hurtgen Forest is something I wish I knew more about, but regrettably, I don’t. This film, however, makes me keen to find out and the ability for a film to do that on a subject such as World War II is a huge credit to it’s makers. Story So let's start from the beginning. The film starts with story reel footage of American troops marching down the Champs Elysee in Paris after it was liberated, a patriotic and determined song playing in the background. This is then replaced by an all too real scene of a soldier carrying his bleeding and dying comrade away from an attack that left them the sole survivors of their platoon. Advantages: Detailed history of First World War, very educational
Disadvantages: Very long and detailed

...This boxed set is a superbly detailed history of the FIrst World War which takes you from the reasons why the war began in 1914 right through to the armastice in 1918. The disks contain 26 individual 45 minute episodes and describes in great detail the battles and outcomes shown in superb (but grainy) b&w film. The great thing about this series is it tells the story from all points of view (German, English, French etc.) both tactically and from the ordinary "tommy" in the trenches. The story of the war is narrated by Sir Michael Redgrave and many leading actors from the time the series was made (1960's)voice the parts of the leading generals and politicians. This boxed set is a must for anyone studying the First World War or with an interest in history and gives a valuable insight into the horrors and carnage of this terrible war. I... Read review
