The setting is a dystopian Japan. The kids are boycotting schools and showing alot of disrespect passes the Battle Royale Act. What is the Battle Royale Act I hear you say. Well isn't it obvious? What would you do with rebelling teenagers? Put them on an island and tell them to kill each other of course.
The action centres around Nanahara - a school boy who everyone seems to love - and his attempt to escape bthis blood fest and protect his girlfriend Noriko. The idea is that the kids go off on the island and kill each other only one is allowed off the island after three days as long as everyone else is dead. Anyone who tries to escape has their head blown off by an irremovable necklace.
This film doesn't take itself seriously, as you can probably tell, it's an entertaining story with plenty of violence. The teacher charcter is extremely obscure (especially at the end). The performances are quite good but it does get annoying how much the writer as chosen to use the love motif. Everyone in it seems to love someone else beyond care for their own life. And EVERYONE loves Nanahara.
Bit of interesting trivia on the film. Quentin Tarantino was so impressed by the girl chigusa'a performance he employed her to play a similar character in Kill Bill.
Strongly recommend this film. Most people will enjoy it.
