Ahh... A film of pure genius. I think it's pretty fair to say only a japanese person could have come up with this highly surreal, but weirdly almost feasible and very convincing film! A first I think, a genuine reason for the violence-a whole plotline built around it! I won't give too much away, but the basic plotline revolves around a class of school kids, kidnapped to play out this bizarre survival of the fittest game on a deserted island. They are provided with some weapons although some are more useful than others, with which they must kill their fellow classmates and friends in order to survive the game. There can only be one survivor, who will be sent home. The story progresses to show how they double cross each other, plead for a truce and the disorientaion of not knowing who to trust. It could sound like a typical gory film with superfluous violence, however I think that is anything but the case as the plotline is so strong and the individual stories quite moving.
There is apparently a sequel, but it is directed by Kinji Fukasaku's (the original director) son so it could be a bit of a mistake, but I am yet to see it, would love to know if anyone has and what they think of it!
Battle Royale is simply another wholly original, soon to be cult classic (bad thing or good thing??) amongst many other Japanese films-such as Ring, Audition and Dark Water. I definitely reccommend any of these, although if you're scared easily maybe not!
