The Battle Of Britain is an absolute wartime classic. Even to this day, it acting, music, special effects and story are unbeaten.
The film starts in France. The British are retreating to Dunkirk and a RAF tempory base is evacuated as the German offensive continues. Meanwhile, Sir Hugh Dowding (head of the RAF) advices Churchill that no more RAF forces should be sent to France as it would weaken the home defenses. With Germany in control of France and the British refusing to surrender, Adolf Hitler orders the Luftwaffe to take control of the skies in preparation of invasion. So the RAF are outnumbered and outgunned and must bare the brunt of the Luftwaffe attacks. But will the RAF be able to hold out against the Luftwaffe and prevent a German invasion of Great Britain.
The story for the film of the battle of Britain is extremely well done. The story follows Sir Hugh Dowding and his struggle to maintain the RAF, the Blitz and several RAF personal who are bearing the brunt of the attacks of the Luftwaffe. But even though the story observes several characters, it still remains faithful to the facts and truly gives some idea of what the actual Battle of Britain was like.
The acting was extremely well done. Michael Caine plays a great squadron leader as well as Christopher Plummer and Robert Shaw. They all portray men who have a great burden to carry defending Britain and keeping their men in shape. Laurence Oliver plays a superb Sir Hugh Dowding and give the proper effect of a calm leader. And Curt Jurgens although having a brief performance plays an excellent Baron von Richers giving him the proper chilling effect. The rest of the cast also provides an enjoyable performance.
The music by Ron Goodwin and William Walton was well composed. The German Luftwaffe march was extremely well done and so was the main theme,
The special effects for the Battle of Britain are superbly done. The use of real spitfires, hurricanes, Messerschmitt and heinkels really does add to the experience of the film. These magnificent planes are caught really well by the camera. The locations were used extremely well. The use of Duxford as one of the key RAF bases that is bombed is to be commended highly.
Overall, The Battle of Britain is a highly commendable film and is a definite worth well buy. I certainly recommend this great film to all.

Nice concise review. I'm sure that I've watched this one but cannot recall it being so star-studded.

Nice review of the film. I've given you a helpful rating because you are reviewing the "special edition" DVD and you didn't mention anything about what makes this DVD special (e.g., features). If you include more information about this I'll re-rate.
