I bought this DVD some months ago mainly because the kids were doing WW2 as a project at school and I remember it being a good film of my youth. Needless to say I rediscovered the quality of the film and as a bonus the kids loved it which kept them quiet for a couple of hours.

The all star cast is outshone by the quality of the aerial photography and the fast paced, all action story. The Battle of Britain is not just the story of the battle but is also a peek into the private lives of the pilots themselves reminding us all exactly what the pilots were fighting for. I have to say the side plots of marital problems lacked quality but thankfully they only took up a minor portion of the film.

The real stars of the film are the (now) vintage aircraft, remembering that this is years before CGI so what you are seeing are real aeroplanes competing in dogfights, except of course for the rather dodgy effects and exploding model aeroplanes. If you can try and forget the quality that CGI brings to modern films and take this at face value you will enjoy the film. Many of the planes came from private collections namely the Hurricanes and Spitfires with the majority of the German aircraft such as the Bf 109’s and Heinkel He 111’s being borrowed from the Spanish air force at the time.

The film aside the plus points to the ‘Special Edition’ DVD come in the form of the ‘Extras’ on the other Disk. The documentaries on the making of the film are fascinating, for example it is explained that the aircraft borrowed from Spain were all re painted in German markings and flown over to Britain. The French weren’t particularly happy about having a Luftwaffe Squadron in full German markings including ‘Balkankreuz’ and swastikas transitting their airspace. The disk also contains the usual ‘making of’ documentaries and theatrical trailers all of interest and well produced.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film again and rather sadly enjoyed the bonus disk too – not sure if that speaks well of the content or poorly of me. I like to think the former. Anyway a great film and a must for any DVD collection. Oh I cant finish without mentioning the score. The music is truly inspiring and taht alone is worth the price of the DVD.

Cant agree more that this is a good film, I think its a brilliant film that does not re-write history with the all-conquering Americans replacing the British!! One bit of advice, this DVD has an alternate soundtrack on it and this is quite a unique feature, this would be an excellent thing to mention. Also have a look around the site at how reviews are structured and formatted, that way you can expand the content for other reviews you publish. You've not really mentioned who is in it, this film has a stellar cast for a 1969 production. Other things to mention would be more information on the extras, for example is the film dated, are the special effects believable and dont forget to always say why you like them. The personal experience is what is effectively being reviewed. Dont get me wrong I like this review and I also think that once you have a look at others and see what they do and how they do it then the sky is the limit, your review brings back some good memories of watching this after the legendary Sunday roast lunch. I review quite a few DVD's so please feel free to pop over anytime. One golden tip - I dont like the text box for construction of a review so I always write it in Word and paste over, that way you get an idea of how it will appear. Drop a note in my GB as I will be happy to answer any questions. Hope this helps and welcome to Ciao. Tim
