I first encountered Batteries Not Included when i was about 5 years old and i remeber loving it then. I was captivated by the alien robots that arrive in an old appartment block due to be knocked down and the five tenants who are struggling to save it.
To this day Batteries Not Included remains one of my all time favourites and i accredit this to several reasons -
- Lead role performance by legendary Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn are perfectly acted so that you really feel for the characters and back them all through the film (the part where the trashed cafe is rebuilt especially)
- Although made in 1987 the alien robots are thoroughly believeable and I would say even quite cute, allowing children of all ages to watch.
- The storyline is well scripted and flows beautifully around love, fear, happiness and even deep sorrow, with some scenes that i always find deeply moving (The hospital 'He's not Bobby' scene *sob*)
A wonderfully made movie that stands the test of time and can still be enjoyed by adults and children alike. I'd say if you see this at the video rental of spot it on tv it's definately worth 1 3/4 hours of anyones time.
