I sat down to watch this film not too long ago and even though i saw it once when it first came out, the sheer turgidness of the movie only truly hit me this time round. It starts out bad when not-so dastardly Mr Freeze begins a siege and freezes everyone around him. Why? He wants diamonds to keep his suit at 0 degrees and his ultimate plan is to revive his terminally ill wife, the thing is though, instead of taking him on, Batman and Robin just crack poor one-liners and beat up some hockey stick wielding thugs (very badly). After the spaceship ride things look to be improving but then we get an awful Uma Thurman who must have had an off-day and the horrendous Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl (a character which was not needed let alone played well by the actress). The entrance of biker-batgirl who teams up with Robin is perhaps one of the worst elements as Chris O'Donnell's acting is just horrendous and the action (including a bike race) contains no excitement whatsoever. The elderly gentlemen who plays Alfred the butler tries his best with a limited script (he did a really good job in previous films) but George Clooney was the worst possible choice to be the dark knight, even Bugs Bunny could have done better.
In hindsight though, the director HAS apologised for it and agrees that he could have and should have done far better. His previous film Batman Forever was actually very good so where did it all go wrong? It's doubtful anyone will know but from the dodgy plant-ness of Poison Ivy (who tries to split up Batman and Robin's partnership) to the icy ending which includes the freezing of a dog taking a p against an unfortunate nearby post. This film totally stinks and smells worse than a farmers field when covered in pig crap, Total Film magazine pretty much summed it up at the time when they gave the film upon it's cinematic release: 1 star, with the unforgettable quote: Batsh*te.
It does kinda show how bad a film is when the studio which owns the franchise decide to end it and start afresh which is why Batman Begins was released earlier this year complete with new actors, new characters, totall new story and even a new batmobile, i could go into it further but that would have to be a different review. For now all i can say is steer well clear of Batman and Robin because if you watch it, expect slow death.
