Gotham City is being ravaged by criminal master minds, and the local police force is either corrupt or unable to control it. The DA is taking a hard line on the crime, but seems unable to do anything about it. Then along comes a masked crusader dressed as a giant bat to lend his efforts to the good side. Bruce Wayne, a millionaire who lives in a secluded mansion, is haunted by the murder of his parents in the Gotham back streets years ealier. Determined to avenge his parents, as well as protect the innocent civillians of the city, Bruce lurks in the shadows, half masked vigilante, half man. Vicky Vale is the reporter on his tale who eventually falls for Bruce, but puts herself in the firing line between the battle against mad man trickster "The Joker" who is dropped into a vat of acid by Batman, and vows to take revenge on him whilst planning a massive heist. This is a dark and brooding adventure that gave new life to the legendary DC hero in Tim Burton's make over. Trading in the classic camp of the tv series for a tougher line in action, Michael Keaton is actually very effective both as the quiet and soft spoken Bruce Wayne and his alter ego. Kim Basinger looks good, but acting has never been her strong point. The show is completely hi-jacked though by the brilliant Jack Nicholson, who is both witty and viscious as The Joker. The set pieces required are all very well placed, and the film looks good from the tremendous score to the gothic outlay of the city.

Batman Returns followed on the heals of the first film with Tim Burton and Michael Keaton returning to the fold. Joining them here is a new array of villains headed up by Christopher Walken as Max Shreck, the respected millionaire who is dumping chemical toxins into the city's sewers, Danny De Vito as the hideous Penguin who was dumped into the city's sewers himself as a baby and now rises back to the city's streets in a campaign to become mayor just so that he can get access to the city hall records to take revenge on the first born sons of the city, and most notably Michelle Pfeiffer as the incredibly sexy but completely mad Seline Kyle, who becomes Catwoman after her boss pushes her from their office window and she has to be resuscitated by cats. Her motive is the least explained in the film, but its a delicious performance that completely steals the show from the rest of the cast. Despite the villains being wonderfuly wicked, and the hero of the film still being a well written and rounded character, this all feels a tad soulless and empty. Its louder and faster than the first film, but there is so much to take in that you dont have time to enjoy one set piece that the next one rushes along to grab your attention. Tim Burton and Michael Keaton both left the series after this film, and none of the other cast members returned with the exception of Michael Gough as the faithful butler Alfred, and Pat Hingle as Commissioner Gordon.

Batman Forever has Val Kilmer taking over Batman duties, with Joel Schumacher lending his far more colourful vision to the film. Tim Burton's dark gothic vision is but a memory as Jim Carrey's The Ridler and tommy Lee Jones's Two Faced lend mayhem and madness in. There is a variance of beautiful women along for the ride this time as Drew Barrymore has a pointless cameo, and Nicole Kidman pre-acting chops as the lovely psychiatrist Chase Meridian. Once again, the villiains are far more enjoyable than the hero, especially as Val Kilmer is only adequate where Michael Keaton was once brooding and interesting. Introduce Chris O'Donnell this time as Robin, who gets his first feature in the Batman series. Part of a troupe of circus acts, Dick Grayson's parents are killed by the mad Two Faced, himself a former lawyer who was disfigured by a convict he was trying, so Dick becomes an unwilling Batman's sidekick to fight the evil's of the city. Meanwhile The Ridler is concocting a scheme to steal the brainwaves through the tv screens from all of the city's residents. The plot is virtually non existent, the set pieces and colours taking over and lending a campness to proceedings. But how can you not enjoy this carnival ride which throws up mad men, colourful action, and more witty one liners than a night at Jongleurs.

The beginning of the end came in the form of Batman and Robin. Taking the formula that worked so well for the third Batman outing, this time it all falls rather flat on its face. Schumacher seems to let things get out of hand very early on in this film. And where Batman once stood in the shadows and was a frightening new force for Gotham to face, he is now a twitching nodding dunderhead in the form of the utterly inept George Clooney. Clooney, a man who thinks that charm is a nod and a wink whilst smirking like an old letch is a complete ham in the role of Bruce Wayne. Whilst Chris O'Donnell outshines him at every turn as the much more subtle Robin, he cannot save this rollercoaster ride of crap. Arnold Schwarzenneger takes top billing, shamefully, as Mr Freeze, a lunatic who needs to find the cure to his wife's illness, which coincidently is the same illness that Alfred (Michael Gough, the only real actor on show here) has been diagnosed with. Turning up to add insult to injury is Alicia Silverstone who was Clueless in Clueless but even more clueless here. Add to that the villain "Poison Ivy" played by a normally good Uma Thurman, and you've got a parade of idiots who deliver their lines from the autocue warm up of Saturday Night Live, whilst barely changing their expression. Its a muddy mess of a plot that is virtually unexplainable, and even the mishmash of colours on show cant save this empty vessle from haulting at the first hurdle. Its almost as if Warner Brothers chucked 50 Million quid at the director, told him to get as many famous faces on show as possible and pay the writers the bare minimum. Its a shame that the brilliant promising start of Tim Burton's 1989 classic has been reduced to this incoherent mess of a film only 8 years on, especially when Joel himself showed so much promise with his shot at the Batman franchise. But what can you do when the plot and script is shocking and the actors worse. Thank god Christopher Nolan took over helming for the recent brilliant Batman Begins.

I only got the boxset of the original DVD releases, so there aren't very much extra's on show. But I believe that the Batman Anthology is about to get a release, so hopefully they rectify that in that boxset. But for a boxset, its still shameful that there is so little other than the films to enjoy.
