Review of Van Helsing DVD by afy9mab

Advantages: Tremendous fun that doesn't take itself seriously
Disadvantages: Shoddy CGI in places, more plot holes than a colander

...from their human to vampire forms and attack the local village. We are shown a new take on werewolves, where a man literally tears his skin off. And the millions of slimy batfinks that appear are a sight to behold. It is the animation of the other CGI characters that sometimes lets the production down. In the final battle, not only has Sommers decided to dispense with human actors with whom we have already formed a bond as an audience, but he also serves up two shonky CG monstoids that look as bad as the Scorpion King in “The Mummy Returns”. Honestly, it’s like watching a game on a Sega Megadrive. The beasts aren’t that scary and they lack a sense of physical weight. If only he could put the “Big Book of CGI” down for a minute and either let technology catch up with his imagination or invest in better make-up effects… The only other... Read review

PEPSI PEPSI PEPSI
Review of Antitrust by avitallly

Advantages: Good acting, Lots of twists, Lots of real code, no pretend computers etc
Disadvantages: Product placement beyond a fanatic's wildest dreams, Nothing particularly new about the plot

.... The film is based around a huge Portland based corporation (think Microsoft) run by multi-millionaire, Gary Winston played well by Ted Robbins (think Bill Gates). The company continues to expand, and Winston is obviously breaking antitrust laws, except that nobody can prove it. Milo (Ryan Phillipe) is a unusually cute computer geek who is taken on by Winston to finish a piece of programming which will change communications technology forever (cue evil laughter ahahahAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA). However, Milo soon realises everything isn't as it should be (what a surprise) and uses his super techno-whizz skills to try and bring down Winston and co. and make sure they get their comeuppance. All sounds a bit like Batfink or some other cartoon. In fact that's probably what it's based on, with Bill Gates the baddie thrown in for good measure. The film... Read review

Classic Anime
Review of Akira - (Ultimate Collection) by ReiKo

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...Anime rates higher than Disney any day. Akira was one of the first anime to reach the mainstream western audience. The theme is alternative and science-fiction-related, which was something that the western market lacked at the time. The Akira movie has actually been cut and edited from the original 1988 comics. There are a few alterations in the story, but still a great anime. If you are not in touch which anime and don't know where to start then start with Akira. The animation is good and action packed. Personally I prefer the subtitled version, the dubbed version's voices don't always 'fit' the characters.... Read review
