A breath of boredom
Review of A Breath Of A Scandal DVD by sexybabe7825

Advantages: Maurice Chevalier's cheeky smile
Disadvantages: Boring and very poor and not worth the time unless you like Barbara Cartland books!

...This is one hell of a boring film with no real plot and doesn't deserve to have been made let alone issued. Sophia Loren and Maurice Chevalier are too good for this film and could have done with a far better script. Basically it starts with Sophia Loren living in exile and meeting an american man who causes her to fall off her horse as he tears around Austria in his motor car. He falls in love with her and she returns to Vienna from exile after receiving a pardon for her indiscretions, but she doesn't let the american know who she really is. He travels to Vienna to meet with her father not knowing that that is who he is, he then finds out Sophia is to be engaged to a Russian prince. All terribly boring and then he goes on try to show her how much he loves her. Her father sees this and convinces her to follow her heart right... Read review

Mystery and corruption in post-war Vienna
Review of The Third Man DVD by wyn

Advantages: Orson Welles is top banana
Disadvantages:

...Classic 1949 movie which tells a tale of mystery and corruption in post-war Vienna. Directed by Carol Reed and scripted by Graham Greene, the story concerns pulp writer Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten), who is keen to discover the truth behind the apparent accidental death of his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles). The film follows his quest through the seedy post-war city on a hunt for the unknown "third man" at the scene of Harry's accident. Robert Krasker's photography makes good use of the Vienna location, with plenty of angled shots suggesting a world slightly off keel. Excellent performances are to be found throughout. Especially memorable is Orson Welles, who, despite his minimal on screen time, manages to leave a lasting impression as cynical individualist Harry Lime. Also worth mentioning is the famous theme music. Played... Read review

Not Gin And Lime But Harry
Review of The Third Man DVD by jimbuck

Advantages: Cracking story
Disadvantages: Bit dark

...The haunting Harry Lime Theme played by Anton Karas on the zither is as much part of the film as is Orson Welles. This is a tale of mystery and suspense filmed in black and white on the streets of Vienna in the years following the war. It wouldn't be fair to a new viewer, if one actually exists, to recount the story so I'll confine myself to saying that it is a "must see" film with first rate direction and superbly dark camera work. It captures the mood of post war Vienna with all the rackets going on perfectly and leaves you looking over your shoulder as you walk the dark streets back to your light and bright home....
