Basic Instinct is an erotic thriller released way back in 1992. The film received a mixed reception upon release, some said it was too farfetched but some thought it was a clever thriller with brilliant twists & turns, I have to admit I agree with the latter. The film was made on an estimated budget of $49,000,000. It runs for approximately 129 minutes. The film was one of the highest grossing films of 1992 grossing a an estimated $353 million worldwide. The film is rated 18 as it contains nudity, violence & strong language. Basic Instinct is directed by Paul Verhoeven, he’s well known for directing cult hit Robocop, Total Recall starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. He’s also famous for directing Showgirls which I believe was voted one of the worst films of all times! In total his films have been nominated for 9 Academy Awards.
The main star in Basic Instinct is of course Michael Douglas who these days is solely famous for being married to someone half his age! He starred in Fatal Attraction with Glen Close in 1987 which was a monster hit. He also starred in A Perfect Murder with Gwyneth Paltrow in 1998, A Perfect Murder was a remake of the 1954 Alfred Hitchcock move Dial M For Murder. Michael Douglas’s co-star in Basic Instinct is played by Sharon Stone, Basic Instinct was the role that catapulted her into the spotlight & to this day is still her most famous role. She appeared in Total
Recall in 1990 with Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 1995 she received a Golden Globe for her part in Casino which starred Robert De Niro. In 2006 Sharon Stone starred in a sequel to Basic Instinct, the film bombed at the box office therefore any plans for a third film have been scrapped.
Basic Instinct is about a brutal murder which takes place in the opening scene of the film, you see a woman with blonde hair but you don’t see her face, she’s having sex with a rock star and during sex she stabs him multiple times with an ice pick. You’re then introduced to Michael Douglas’s character Nick Curran, he’s a good detective but his trouble with alcohol has got him into serious trouble in the past and now his colleagues look at him as useless. Upon hearing about the murder Nick Curran is on the investigating team. They already have a prime suspect, bisexual writer Catherine Trammel (Sharon Stone). The murder that took place was identical to a murder depicted in one of her books. Nick and his team have to work out whether she’s acting out her book or if someone’s trying to frame her by carrying out the murder. However things don’t exactly go according to plan & Nick gets more involved with Catherine than he should be… This is a film that up until the other night I had heard of but never seen for myself but my boyfriends parents own this on DVD and we had nothing else to do so we put it on one night. I had heard it was a good film before but for some reason I didn’t think I’d enjoy it much, maybe because it’s such an old film.
To my surprise I actually enjoyed it. I better just point out that if you’re someone that’s easily offended then this definitely isn’t the film for you. There’s a lot of nudity throughout the film and there’s some strong language and violence right from the offset. However if you can look passed all that you’ll actually see that this is a really good film. Right from the beginning I found myself guessing as you don’t know who the killer is all you know is that she’s blonde but of course that could easily be a wig. I found myself asking my boyfriend if it was her as soon as Sharon Stone came into the picture, something which I don’t know why as he hadn’t seen it either! Of course this film is really only remembered for one scene, I’ve see lots of spoofs of it and I was aware that this was the film it came from and I can now see why it’s so memorable. Not just because of the nudity but because of how Sharon Stone portrays her character brilliantly. I especially liked the line about smoking ‘what are you gonna charge me with smoking’ while she was being interviewed. Of course it was somewhat coincidental that the whole room was filled with about 10 men when she uncrossed her legs to reveal she wasn’t wearing any underwear!
There’s a lot of twists throughout the film which I found riveting & not obvious whatsoever, one of them in particular I totally didn’t see coming and I was shocked when it came to light. This of course is helped along by Michael Douglas’s portrayal of the confused detective as when he finds out you find out so you almost feel like you’re on the journey with him. The acting in this film was absolutely brilliantly and although Michael Douglas was good as Nick I think most of the credit should go to Sharon Stone as her portrayal of Catherine Trammel was simply fantastic, she really got the character down exactly and you can see why Michael Douglas becomes so mesmerized by her. She manages to be sexy but menacing at the same time and I can understand why this film became such a hit. I haven’t seen the second film but I hear it’s nothing compared to the original but I kind of want to see it just to see what Catherine Trammel does this time.
This film is over two hours long and although it starts off strong with the murder scene it does get a bit stagnant in the middle but during the last hour it really heats up and you become gripped with what’s going on. You really find yourself willing Nick Curran on to uncover the truth about who committed the murder. The twist at the end is fantastic and it leaves it open to interpretation about what happened to Nick. I wont give away the ending but if you’re going to watch this film you must watch it all the way through as I thought the ending was genius. I’d highly recommend this film to anyone who isn’t easily offended. If you look passed the sexual content as it’s somewhat irrelevant you’ll see this film for what it is, a clever, taut thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
The DVD special features include: 'Blonde Poison' Featurette Trailer Audio Commentary You’ll probably agree that it’s not exactly a wide range of special features however this film is 17 years old so I personally wasn’t expecting much. If a film this old includes any special features I think it’s an achievement as this was before DVD’s were even around!
The DVD is available to buy from play.com for £5.00, the blu-ray edition is £14.99 I would recommend just buying the regular DVD as for £5 you’re not losing much are you? Basic Instinct 2 is also available from play.com for £5.99 something which I intend on buying soon as I was so impressed with the original.
