Basic Instinct is a nice entertainer with enough dose of romance, action, suspense and sex (though sex is a bit overdosed). It is really exciting to see Sharon Stone in an interesting role. Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone have a very interesting chemistry between them. The screenplay is very good and it keeps the viewer have two minds about the real murderer till the last scene. Sustaining the suspense till the last scene is very difficult but the director succeeded in doing that. Barring a couple of hiccups, the movie keeps the viewer glued to the seat with interesting plot, scenes, the suspense and of course Sharon Stone.
Plot
Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) is an alcoholic detective in San Fransisco. He is in a relation with Beth Garner (Jeanne Tripplehorn), a psychologist and she works with police department. One day Nick gets to take up a murder trail of a famous rock star Johnny Boz and in the process of investigation he had to interrogate Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone) who had been spotted with the victim before his death. Meanwhile Curran comes to know that Trammell wrote a novel about the rock star and in the book he dies the same way he died. But this couldn't lead him anywhere but he slowly gets attracted to Tramell.
Curran has a big show down with one of his colleagues, Officer Nielsen and after this incident the officer is found dead in his car. Many suspect Curran as the murderer and meanwhile a passionate affair starts between Curran and Trammell.
In his investigation, Curran learns many facts which say that Trammell is the murderer while equally enough facts say that Beth Garner is the real culprit. The interesting fact he knows is that the two ladies had a lesbian affair in their college days.
Someone calls Curran's partner in investigation to an apartment and while Curran waits outside the building, his partner goes inside. After waiting for sometime and having heard nothing from his partner, Curran goes to see if everything is fine. But he sees his partner dead and sees Beth at the murder point. When she tries to take something out from her coat, Curran thinks that she is trying to take out pistol and kills her. But he finds that she was trying to take out keys. After examining the apartment, he finds enough evidence to say that Beth is the true murderer.
But is she the real murderer? or was she just framed? If she is not the real culprit, then who is?
My Opinion
I really liked the movie. The suspense element is really nice and the performances were very good. Everyone gave very convincing performances. As a youth I enjoyed the scenes between Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas.
Conclusion
Nice movie with some exciting moments. Since it is mainly a suspense movie, it can not be watched more than once. But if one has to watch Sharon Stone, then it is definitely a nice buy. It is a good movie for a weekend!
