(2006): Dr. Michael Glass (Morrissey) a respected London criminal psychiatrist is brought in by Scotland Yard detective Roy Washburn (Thewlis) to perform a psychiatric profile and evaluation of novelist Catherine Tramell (Stone) following the mysterious death of a top sports star. Physically drawn to Tramell and mentally intrigued by her Glass is quickly sucked into her web of lies and seduction. The professional boundaries between Glass and Tramell are obliterated when she uncovers his basic instincts... Fracture (Dir. Gregory Holbit) (2007): When Ted Crawford (Anthony Hopkins) discovers that his beautiful younger wife Jennifer (Embeth Davidtz) is having an affair he plans her murder...the perfect murder. Among the police arriving at the crime scene is hostage negotiator Detective Rob Nunally (Billy Burke) the only officer permitted entry to the house. Surprisingly Crawford readily admits to shooting his wife but Nunally is too stunned to pay close attention when he recognizes his lover whose true identity he never knew lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Although Jennifer was shot at point blank range Nunally realizes she isn't dead. Crawford is immediately arrested and arraigned after confessing - a seemingly slam-dunk case for hot shot assistant district attorney Willy Beachum (Ryan Gosling) who has one foot out the door of the District Attorney's (David Strathairn) office on his way to a lucrative job in high-stakes corporate law. But nothing is as simple as it seems including this case. Will the lure of power and a love affair with a sexy ambitious attorney (Rosamund Pike) at his new firm overpower Willy's fierce drive to win or worse quash his code of ethics? In a tense duel of intellect and strategy Crawford and Willy both learn that a "fracture" can be found in every ostensibly perfect facade. Domino (Dir. Tony Scott) (2005): The already larger than life story of Domino Harvey (daughter of British actor Laurence Harvey) a former Ford model turned bounty hunter takes on mythological proportions in Tony Scott's fast-paced action thriller; fashioned from a script by Donnie Darko writer/director Richard Kelly. Unfolding in a non-linear fashion as bloodied Domino (Keira Knightley) is interrogated by iron faced officer Taryn Miles (Lucy Liu) the film traces the trajectory of Domino's tumultuous life. Beginning with the death of her father Domino develops into a hard nosed scrappy young woman who trains with nunchucks beside her mother's luxurious pool and responds violently to anyone who crosses her. Bored with the runway and the glamorous LA life Domino shows up for a bounty-hunter seminar. Catching the "teachers" of the seminar as they try to cut and run with the proceeds she manages to win their respect and joins their team. This consists of Ed Mosbey (Mickey Rourke) the tough-as-nails leader and Domino's surrogate father and Choco (Edgar Ramirez) an impulsive Venezuelan who harbors a not-so-secret love for Domino. The three form a kind of family working under Claremont Williams (Delroy Lindo) who "plays Charlie to their three angels." For a time they are unstoppable even agreeing to let the slimy Mark Heiss (Christopher Walken) produce a reality-TV show about them which is hilariously hosted by Beverly Hills 90210 stars Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green. But when Claremont orchestrates a complicated inside job in order to raise the money for his granddaughter's doctor bills the precarious balance within the trio is disturbed. Tom Waits stands out in a cameo as a wise wanderer who advises the lost bounty hunters.

Having turned her back on San Francisco Catherine Tramell is now living in London; but of course it's not long before she comes to the attention of the police. But then driving off a road into the water at a time of sexual climax, while managing to kill your passenger is always likely to cause attention.
With Kevin Franks dead (her passenger) it's down to the psychiatrists to decide if her part in his death is intentional. And like the previous Basic Instinct Catherine plays a deadly game of cat and mouse with her folly. But this time has she been playing a game to hard for her to beat?

Possibly the first thing that people think when hearing the words "Basic Instinct 2" is "oh my God!" And they would certainly be justified in their statement. However had the movie not had a reference to the original movie and just carried the tag line Risk Addiction I'm sure it would have received a warmer greeting. Of course you cannot overcome the casting; and I'm sure the casting associate had a good long walk around the skips of London picking out waifs and strays as they went.
So what's wrong with the movie?
David Morrisey is a good place to start; even on television Morrisey is hard to cast. Now Britain's favourite turd in a suit is cast in a movie that's been 15 years in the making. Morrisey is not convincing as the psychiatrist whom Tramell (stone) has caught in her vicious web. Morrisey tries hard to hide his accent on times losing it completely; saddle that with his terrible animated performance and its like Crossroads never closed.
Strike two comes in the form of David Thewlis; I can never understand the fascination with Thewlis. Believe it or not but there are people out there who consider him a talented actor. But how hard can it be to play yourself? Because Thewlis consistently plays exactly the same part in every film he is in. Here he plays a bent Geordie cop who is adamant he will have Trammel convicted for murder even if it means that he must create his own evidence. Of great amusement is Thewlis' final scene of the movie which literally comes direct from a school play.
Strike three its Britains favourite constipated actress Charlotte Rampling; and you need to ask has this woman ever appeared in a movie that people like? It seems that thirty two years ago she made a slightly steamy movie called The Night Porter and she has been running off that reputation ever since. You cannot warm to her and her character and you spend most of the movie wishing someone would put a gun to her head and fire.
Strike four Heathcote Williams there was a time where the inclusion of Heathcote Williams would add a level of style to a movie; but those days are long gone. Like a British version of Andy Warhole with a nasty died wig and Michael Jackson style plastic surgery Williams bobs in and out of the movie like he is something. But he is not; Williams knows that but why did the person responsible for the casting know.
Strike Five Stan Collymoore, no sooner had he got involved with an old trollop down on The Farm; then he had jumped aboard the tale of this movie hoping for a brand new career. The good news is that Stan is on screen for about 3 minutes and says only one or two sentences before he is despatched to a watery grave.
But you have to keep asking; who on earth cast this monstrosity well you might be surprised to hear that Karen Lindsay Stewart is behind some of the best castings of modern movie history. Obviously she was having an off day when it came to Basic Instinct 2.
It's not all bad news; the story is quite good. And if you have never seen the first Basic Instinct then you may be excused for thinking it's not a bad movie. Trouble being if you did see the original you'll know the plot as it slowly unfolds. And I mean slowly; 114 minutes is the runtime of this movie something that could easily be reduced by 20 - 30 minutes.
I must add that Jerry Goldsmiths original score is again used for this sequel. And it actually suits the feel of this movie than it did the original. So full marks for re-using the score as it gave the movie a feeling of class that it would otherwise have lacked.
Basic Instinct 2 also tries to cash in on the smut factor; thinking it can get some of the naughty element that made its predecessor so controversial. But the smuts all to British; yes lets have an orgy we have not down that in a British movie before! Next step lets imply a bit of buggery What Ho! The bits where the movie tries to be near the knuckle just don't work; not even in the vaguest sense. There will be no titillation for viewers with this dirty old rag of a film.
So my advice to you viewer is that if you never saw Basic Instinct; then Basic Instinct 2 may be worth a watch. If you did see the original then I'm sorry to say you'll hate this; its far too similar, but at the same time out of place. And of course it helps if the casting is worth a mention. But with the exception of Sharon Stone who looks stunning there is nobody worth mentioning. Even studly Hugh Dancy looks like someone they picked up off the street and offered him a few bottles in exchange for a days work.
We have been spared of Special Features with this movie, and I must comment that the quality of print is very poor. It looks good but the scenes when dark goes to light is very amateurish rather like a student film. I'm assured this is down to the DVD production rather than being the movie and the people who are releasing the DVD printed several thousand discs before they realised and stated "The discs will be released as they are; future prints will be corrected. We feel that the only the most critical eye will notice this error" Well done Columbia Tristar.
Basic Instinct 2 will be released on the 7th August to rent or buy. Retail price is £19.99 but you can purchase the DVD from play.com for £12.99. My advice buy your other half a bottle of plonk and rent it instead.
Advantages: Yes Sharon Stone gets naked. woooooo... *rolls eyes* Disadvantages: Just tell me who killed who will you?!
...have not seen the first Basic Instinct film, but from what I gather it was a movie that you felt really uncomfortable watching with your grandparents.
Fortunately I don't think this movie will have the same problem. It is more likely that your grandparents will have slipped into some sort of confusion induced comma before she gets to see Sharon Stone doing the dirty stuff.
For those of you wanting to see this JUST to see Sharon Stone naked (that's ... ...here is your review. YES she gets naked and YES she gets it doggy style. Review over. Now let's move onto the details of the plot.
The plot is more confusing than a Mexican dyslexic with a lisp trying to tell you the plot of Mission Impossible using txt speak over msn, and as annoying as if he were doing it with a 56k connection. It will drive you nuts.
I know it's taken me a while to get round to it, but I'm just trying to convey how amazingly ...

Advantages: Sharom Stone Gets Naked, For The Sad Old Men? Disadvantages: Everything Else.
...I havn't seen the original Basic Instinct and i don't know if this one is made easier to understand if you have but i genuingly just think Basic Instinct 2 is a muddle. It really is, i can't even explain what goes on as i don't know. No other film as ever done this to me, i mean, i even got Donnie Darko! I can guarantee if that confused you this is going to kill you at least cause you some mental harm in the long run.
Basically, people die. And ... ...bewilderement. If there's ever a Basic Instinct 3 i am not going to watch it simply to keep myself sane and of good health. I am confident this film has taken 3 years off of my life.
However, it's one of those films isn't it. Like, if you havn't seen it, and your mates have, they're gonna be talking about it and talking about how they didn't understand it. And your going to be left out. I wont recommend it as i don't want man slaughter charges against ...

Advantages: Sharon Stone, David Thewlis. Disadvantages: Preposterous plot, flabby midsection, sketchy characters, puritanical cut, that thing on Gerst's head, Catherine's haircut.
...She's baaack!
Catherine Tramell returns to the screen, and fourteen years after our first shocking encounter with the notorious film anti-heroine, another dead body turns up in suspiciously close proximity.
In the opening sequence to 'BasicInstinct2', Catherine is racing through the roadways of night time London at a hundred miles - er, correction, a hundred * and-twenty * miles per hour while engaging in risky business in such circumstances: 'self-pleasure' with the help of the football star seated next to her. Soon the speeding little sports car crashes through a large glass pane and plunges into the cold, dark waters of the Thames below. Catherine saves herself while her companion goes down with the car, and it's Detective Roy Washburn's job to find out if Catherine is responsible for the footballer's death...

Advantages: Dreadful acting, terrible direction, woeful production values and abysmal script Disadvantages: It made me laugh, though I don't think it was supposed to
...thriller that requires brooding strings and big orchestral brass to get its message across. It's sub-Bond in its use of echoing chimes and sinister strings and flutes. It might actually be good if it wasn't attached to such an abysmal movie.
"BasicInstinct2: Risk Addiction" is an object lesson in the law of diminishing returns. Sadly I don't think that's enough to stop a third being made. Apparently Sharon Stone is in talks to direct the next instalment. The sad thing being that even if it manages to be worse than this debacle, it will probably get the green light. Only watch this if you're in the mood for high comedy. Every aspect of the film is laughable, until you realise you've been duped out of the price of a ticket and almost two hours of your life....

Advantages: Brilliant performances, excellent storyline Disadvantages: A bit too long
...of your seat from start to finish.
The DVD special features include:
'Blonde Poison'
Featurette Trailer
Audio Commentary
You’ll probably agree that it’s not exactly a wide range of special features however this film is 17 years old so I personally wasn’t expecting much. If a film this old includes any special features I think it’s an achievement as this was before DVD’s were even around!
The DVD is available to buy from play.com for £5.00, the blu-ray edition is £14.99 I would recommend just buying the regular DVD as for £5 you’re not losing much are you? BasicInstinct2 is also available from play.com for £5.99 something which I intend on buying soon as I was so impressed with the original....

DVD Description
In BASIC INSTINCT 2, a sequel to the 1992 original, Sharon Stone resumes the role that first made her famous. Beautiful American author Catherine Tramell (Stone) is living in London, when she is involved in a sexually charged car accident leading to the scandalous death of a famous British athlete. Raunchy and irreverent, Tramell likes to shock people with both her words and her actions. Dr. Michael Glass (David Morrissey), who is evaluating her for trial at the request of Dept. Superintendent Roy Washburn (David Thewlis), is no exception. Just coming out of a divorce and facing the resurrection of an old situation that could ruin his career, Glass is slowly but surely sucked into Tramell's web, when he takes her on as a private therapy client. Day by day Glass realises that she has infiltrated more of his personal relationships, which also leads him to question why so many people in his circle are suffering questionable fates. Each time Glass is convinced that Tramell is guilty, she diverts suspicion in another direction. Does gossip magazine writer Adam Towers (Hugh Dancy) plan to reveal a deadly decision that Glass made in his past? Is Dept. Washburn really the upstanding cop he appears to be? Is Glass's ex-wife, Denise (Indira Varma) trying to sabotage his career? The twists and turns in the plot keep everyone guessing in this psychological thriller, directed by Michael Caton-Jones (THIS BOY'S LIFE, THE JACKAL).
