of 1774 seems to offer Richard Bolitho and his friend Martyn Dancer the culmination of a dream. Both have been recommended for promotion, although they have not yet gained the coveted lieutenant's commission. But a routine passage from Plymouth to Guernsey in an untried schooner becomes, for Bolitho, a passage from midshipman to King's officer, tempering the promise of the future with the bitter price of maturity.

Private Ryan, an abiding passion to further honour the young fighting soldiers of WWII was born in both men, resulting in Band of Brothers, an ambitious 10-part mini-series based on historian Stephen Ambrose's account of a 101st Airborne regiment as it fought its way across Europe. In scoring the sweeping project, Michael Kamen has eschewed much of the martial music familiar from past war epics in favour of the quiet, largely introspective sound that has informed modern battle films from Platoon through Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line. And if his reverential, often somber tones capture the dignity of the soldiers and the gravity of the events, they sometimes do so at the expense of other human dimensions--and the lively pop music of the 1940s. Still, Kamen's work strikes an impressive balance, fusing the pastoral with subtle modern rhythm touches and utilising spare piano solos, a darkly ironic use of Beethoven's String Quartet in C-Sharp Minor, and a memorable, elegiac main theme. --Jerry McCulley
Advantages: As close as it gets to the real thing? Disadvantages: May be uncomfortably close for some?
...realize that my review about Band of Brothers is quite lengthy, and for that I apologize because I am aware that long commentaries have the habit of becoming tedious or even self indulgent.. But I feel I would be doing a great disservice to the Band of Brothers experience by not being as thorough as possible.
Experiencing Band of Brothers starts not in the battlefields of Europe, nor in Camp Toccoa, Georgia. It begins in your hand, with the classically ... ...to detail that makes the Band of Brothers experience so riveting.
I first read Steven Ambrose’s book about the citizen soldiers who fought in the major battles of the European Theatre of World War Two some years ago. At the time I remember asking myself how would I have done? Would I have stood up to the whine of enemy bullets that played around my head like the buzz of so many bees? Was there anything special about me that could have pulled me ...

Advantages: Reminds us how important it is not to start war Disadvantages: Teaches us the perils of war
Here, I will be reviewing Band of Brothers... This is based on a Bestseller by Stephen E Ambrose. This is a true story put onto the small screen by the collaboration of Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.
This critically acclaimed, award winning mini-series follows the epic heart rending story of the mission of Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S Army. Set in World War Two, and one of its early Platoon leaders, Richard Winters. ... ...soldier's journals and letters home, Band of Brothers chronicles the experiences of these men who knew extraordinary bravery and fear.
The cast
The cast of the mini-series are as follows: Kirk Acevedo, Eion Bailey, Dale Dye, Scott Grimes and David Schwimmer (of 'Friends' fame). This has been recreated with stunning special effects, and the second collaboration between Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg (after Saving Private Ryan), the series is both ...

Advantages: Excellent 'real-life' footage of combat scenes Disadvantages: Suddenly stops when you want more action
Band of Brothers (BoB) is an excellent 6 disc (in a tin box) that covers the story of Easy company - a band of Americans who trained together in 1943 and then went on to capture Hilters Eagle Nest in May 1945.
Each episode follows a different group of paratroopers (the 101st Airbourne Division) through some pretty horrendous action against the Germans in France, Holland and Germany.
Each episode is directed by a different director - including Tom ... ...start their relationships as the Band of Brothers. All the men in Easy company rebel against their officer (played by David Schwimmer - should have stayed in Friends - I kept wanting him to say Joey or Derr! - very off-putting). Needless to say he no-longer leads them into combat.
Episode 2 - Day of Days -(Dir - Richard Lonraine) D - Day: 6th June 1944- the big drop into occupied France - now were talking good action and cinematography - you have ...

Advantages: Superbly filmed and very believeable Disadvantages: tough to watch in parts, can be a little depressing
Band of Brothers remains one of my favourite TV shows of all time. Its well written, well shot and most importantly its believable.
Band of Brothers follows the story of Easy company, an increadible group of paratroopers. The story spans right through from their training, through D-Day, the battle of the bulge and finally the capture of Hitlers Eagles nest. The series is made up of 10 hour long episodes in a fantastic six disk box set which includes a whole disk of extras.

This episode sets the background for the characters and although not the most exciting of episodes, it helps you to understand how these "band of brothers" became so close and how that helped them throughout the war.

...war 2 then buy the band of brothers box set. Directed by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The series follows the men of Easy company from boot camp to VE day. Based on the testimony of real soldiers from the airborne division, it is the closest portrayal of the second world war i have ever watched.
