Band of Brothers
As grippingly as any novelist, preeminent World War II historian Stephen Ambrose uses Band

of Brothers to tell the horrifying, hallucinatory saga of Easy Company, whose 147 members he calls the nonpareil combat paratroopers on earth circa 1941-45. Ambrose takes us along on Easy Company's trip from gruelling basic training to Utah Beach on D-day, where a dozen of them turned German cannons into dynamited ruins resembling "half-peeled bananas", on to the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of part of the Dachau concentration camp, and a large party at Hitler's "Eagle's Nest", where they drank the his (surprisingly inferior) champagne. Of Ambrose's main sources, three soldiers became rich civilians; at least eight became teachers; one became Albert Speer's jailer; one prosecuted Robert Kennedy's assassin; another became a mountain recluse; the despised, sadistic CO who first trained Easy Company (and to whose strictness many soldiers attributed their survival of the war) wound up a suicidal loner whose own sons skipped his funeral. The Easy Company survivors describe the hell and confusion of any war: the senseless death of the nicest kid in the company when a souvenir Luger goes off in his pocket; the execution of a GI by his CO for disobeying an order not to get drunk. Despite the gratuitous horrors it relates, Band of Brothers illustrates what one of Ambrose's sources calls "the secret attractions of war ... the delight in comradeship, the delight in destruction ... war as spectacle". --Tim Appelo

Private Ryan, an abiding passion to further honour the young fighting soldiers of WWII was born in both men, resulting inBand of Brothers, an ambitious 10-part mini-series based on historian Stephen Ambrose's account of a 101st Airborne regiment as it fought its way across Europe. In scoring the sweeping project, Michael Kamen has eschewed much of the martial music familiar from past war epics in favour of the quiet, largely introspective sound that has informed modern battle films fromPlatoonthroughPrivate RyanandThe Thin Red Line. And if his reverential, often somber tones capture the dignity of the soldiers and the gravity of the events, they sometimes do so at the expense of other human dimensions--and the lively pop music of the 1940s. Still, Kamen's work strikes an impressive balance, fusing the pastoral with subtle modern rhythm touches and utilising spare piano solos, a darkly ironic use of Beethoven's String Quartet in C-Sharp Minor, and a memorable, elegiac main theme. --Jerry McCulley

Advantages: High quality retelling of WWII heroics Disadvantages: Gory in parts
Band of Brothers
Following the critical and commercial success of Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks believed that there were more stories from WWII that needed retelling. Inspired by the book by Stephen Ambrose of the same name they chose to tell the story of Easy Company; one of the US Army's first paratrooper regiments and one of the most decorated. Utilising all the clout at their disposal they decided that rather than making ... ...is now the norm and Band of Brothers is no different, where handheld cameras and fizzing sound effects bring you to the heart of the action. While 'Saving Private Ryan' opened with this brutal scene, here the opening episode takes us to the Toccoa training camp, a far gentler introduction that allows us the time to get to know the men and witness the growing camaraderie between them as they get their paratrooper's wings and the date for entering ...

Advantages: A very powerful and thought provoking account of the men of Easy Company. The different emotions that the soldiers experienced at the pain that many felt. The special effects are outstanding and the directors Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg do a great job Disadvantages: The images can be very alarming and do reflect the hardship and danger of war
...I recently borrowed the entire Band of Brothers collection from a friend at school. There was a big party at his house and I stumbled across the DVD set whilst ‘nosing around’. I instantly exclaimed: ‘Band of Bruvva’s!’ I had remembered seeing bits and pieces of it on the television a few years back and immediately asked if I could borrow it. So borrow it I did and I have sat and watched through the whole thing in the past few days. The Second World ... ...and you can see why Band of Brothers is so highly regarded. The whole series is such a pleasure from beginning to end, it is thoroughly gripping and slightly addictive too. The majority of what goes on looks and seems very real, not much appears ‘put on’ by the actors so do get that feeling that everything is realistic.
The best part overall is of course the story line and trying to understand all of the different emotions that the soldiers of Easy ...

My Opinion

This is a fantastic box set to have - I absolutely loved it. Yes I was movd to tears in more than one place throughout the series but you would have to be completely void of emotion to sit through the whole thing dry-eyed. ... ...i put on the first disc I had to watch the other 5 straight after. This has to be one of the best things i have watched on DVD in such a long time.
For this reason I am giving this DVD box set the five star recommendation - to me this is a must-see. It is quite pricey at £59.99 but if you shop around I have seen it advertised on line for £29.99. LIke I said earlier I ws given this as a gift, but I would have happily paid £29.99 to buy it as I think ...

...of what to expect from Band of Brothers, the T.V. series also helmed by Hanks and Spielberg. Band of Brothers is a T.V. series first shown on satellite television in 2002, and based on true stories from interviews with the soldiers themselves, along with diaries and letters written at the time. It was so popular that when the boxed DVD and video sets were released just before Chistmas of 2002, almost everywhere had completely sold out. Happily, it's ... ...DVD version, and about the same for the videos. It is based on the book of the same name by Stephen Ambrose, who is also a co-executive director of the series. It carries a 15 certificate, and I would advise people who hate the sight of blood and gore watch this with a friend who can tell them when to look away.
Many of the actors in the series are relatively unknown, but you will come across several familiar faces. All of the actors without exception ...

Advantages: A fair and honest portrayal of the US "Citizen Soldiery " of WWII Disadvantages: There are none
In this day and age it has probably been all too quickly forgotten that even as recently as 40 years ago, the ordinary citizenry were conscripted, en masse, into their countries' armed forces in order to fight wars. Millions were young men, in their late teens or early twenties, with their entire lives before them. Many were unwilling to kill, more were even less willing to die. Nevertheless when the call went out, the overwhelming majority responded ... ...to "get the job done and come home".
"Band of Brothers", based upon the late Stephen E Ambrose's book of the same title, follows the fortunes of the men and officer's of Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division from basic training through to the conclusion of the war in Europe. And whilst this is an account of one particular unit's experiences in one of the most ruthless wars ever fought, it stands as a testimony ...

...I you ever wanted to know what it would have been like to have fought in world war 2 then buy the band of brothersboxset. Directed by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.
The series follows the men of Easy company from boot camp to VE day. Based on the testimony of real soldiers from the airborne division, it is the closest portrayal of the second world war i have ever watched. Watching band of brothers really made me think about how lucky i am to live in an era when the world is not at war. It also shows just how much ordinary men sacrificed, for the freedom of others.
The cast is excellent and every single acting performance is fantastic. Especially the performances of Damian Lewis ( Maj. Richard D. Winters), Donnie Wahlberg ( 2nd Lt. C. Carwood Lipton) and David Schwimmer ( Capt. Herbert Sobel). As you watch each episode you will also...
