Foreign cinema is gradually creeping back into the mainstream, with films like the excellent Belleville Rendez-vous and amelie occupying primetime slots on major channels on christmas day last year. There has also been an influx of japanese films being released at the cinema and the inevitable american remakes which cause more and more people to investigate the original incarnations.
I extremely doubt that this film will be the victim of an american remake or the kind of film to be shown on christmas day after only fools and horses.
Baise Moi (translated as F*** Me) is a classic revenge tale about a prostitute and a recently raped girl who embark on a killing spree after acquiring the appetite for murder after killing people close to them. This spree is punctuated by various graphic sexual encounters that become increasingly extreme towards the end. The film is french with subtitles.
The two protagonists are played by real life porn stars which, many critics say. adds a meaningful edge to this film. For me this is people trying to make something more of this film than is onscreen.
Basically porn wrapped up with a flimsy storyline (although isnt that what porn is normally?) that begins and ends brutally, the whole controversy surrounding it being banned in france is mainly bacause of the rape scene that is suitably shocking and does impact in a fairly large way. The rest of the film is just badly acted, shot in an amateurish way, structured in no particularly clever way and backed by a cheap nasty soundtrack. Nothing about this film impresses in any way.
For a film with a similar theme that does actually impress itself on the viewer i would recommend another french film called irreversable, compared to that , Baise Moi is shown up as the nasty exploitation flick it is.
I am a fan of all types of film and chose this as a recommendation from someone who had not seen irreversable, needless to say that when i showed him that he seen changed his mind.
The dvd has scant extras, a short making of, a small question and answer session with the director, that goes round in circles trying to add layers to this shallow tale and the usual trailer stuff. You can pick it up fairly cheap from online retailers at about seven quid or in high street promotions, the cover depicts one of the main characters in their underwear holding a gun in a pink haze. Its around seventy minutes long, thank god. And carries an obvious eighteen rating
Theres nothing i can recommend about this film to be honest, as i've said i'm an open minded film fan but this has no redeemable qualities, no real talent with the main actresses and a hum drum storyline earn this a place on my shelf but not a place in my player.
If any of you guys get your kicks from this stuff i'm sure you can get better stuff rom your local private shop
