Director: Michael Bay. Producer: Jerry Bruckheimer Writers: Ron Shelton, Jerry Stahl, Cormac Wibberley and Marianne Wibberley Stars: Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Jordi Mollá, Gabrielle Union, Peter Stormare, Theresa Randle and Joe Pantoliano.
Released by Columbia pictures in the summer of 2003, eight years after the original action/ comedy movie, being nearly 2 and a half hours long.
It is a known fact, (in my head anyway) , that many well established movies, which when first released, managed to create a rather large fan base due to its shear entertainment value, will always try and spawn a sequel or two in the hope that it will be as good, if not better than its forerunner … And as many sequels fall far short in that entertainment value this sequel to the 1995 hit ’Bad Boys’ had a very high mountain to climb, considering the exceptionally pleasing all round first movie back then. So when Bay, Simpson and Bruckheiler decided to join forces in their quest once more, nearly ten years after their original meeting, with the idea of recreating the same form of action and comedy, using the same two faces as the main characters, they messed up on just one little detail… they failed to find some writers with the same calibre as Barrie, Mulholland and Richardson, (who gave us the first Bad Boys radiance in ’95). Instead, using different writers to create this almost desperate sequel.
** BRIEF PLOT…
Mike Lowry (Will Smith)
, the womanising charmer with a little lost boy look, and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) , the more family orientated sensible one in the partnership, are Miami police officer who are in charge of a drug investigation task force. During one particular investigation they come across Hector Juan Carlos ‘Johnny’ Tapia, (Jordi Molla) , a slightly bizarre Cuban drug baron, who plans to take control of the drug supplies coming into the city, much to the annoyance of the Russian Mafia who take great offence to the new ‘kingpin’. With ‘Johnny’ setting about taking on the Russian Mafia, opening the doors to what could become a drug war, it is up to Lowry and Burnett to stop him…only the two officers have their own ‘personal problems’ when Sydney, (Gabriele Union) , Burnetts’ sister, comes to visit and is soon getting on very well with Lowry, leading to some over protected brotherly love, distracting the pair from their investigations. But the innocent looking sister has her own little secret which the bad boys are soon to discover, much to Burnetts’ horror.
** IN CONCLUSION…
Looking at the DVD cover, with the two ’heroes’ standing tall amongst a swirl of yellowy mist, fully armed and waiting for action, this does look like it is going to be a fully action packed movie with many gunfights, car chases and a lot of fists flying…. But this is one of them DVD covers which really should be dragged through the European courts on false advertising charges.
Don’t get me wrong, it is still a fast action packed movie with many of the same characteristics from Lawrence and Smith to make people remember these guys from the first movie, seeming to try and make the audience flash back to the reckless police officers adventures back then. But it does appear that the characters have matured too much whilst the ideas in this sequel have tried to keep them in their youthful bubbles, coming across as if watching Edward Woodward beating Jackie Chan to a pulp with a soggy cucumber.
The actors do what they can with the slightly ‘iffy’ and very over the top script, bringing some entertainment to the screen as you watch. Smith is his funny self as per usual with Lawrence being almost as comical, yet with that slightly serious ‘I’m a grown up’ outlook on life, the two combining once more to create a brilliantly funny and very dry witted double act, (think Morecombe and Wise with attitude, and an even sillier dance, and you have them to a tee). And Jordi Mollá plays the part of the slightly insane and very evil ‘bad guy’ with his charming good looks and somewhat good all round acting. As for ex-model turned actress Gabrielle Union, well, she certainly brings in the eye catching entertainment for the red blooded male section of the audience… one word, stunning…. She not only looks good but she plays her part perfectly well indeed, keeping up with Smith and Lawrence on the ‘enjoyability’ scale. If only the actors were put into another plot then this would have been far more enjoyable indeed…
As for the plot itself..??? This does fall short on the scale of believability and enthralment levels, (compared to the mother ship which spawned the naughty young men), being over the top in parts and totally stupid in others. Although it is good idea in general it does look like the writers were trying to rely to much on the action shots and the special effects rather than trying to tell a more believable story, thus causing the plot to become so silly that many of the audience members would lose the plot..!!?? And with the ending coming across as being a little rushed, almost as if the writing team were on a dead line but late for a dinner date, trying to bring in a little ‘shock’ factor into the ending, but falling short, creating more ‘shocking’ than ‘shock’.
Apart from my somewhat negative view towards the actual storyline itself I did slightly enjoy the small amount of good action and the comical banter between Lawrence and Smith, they do seem to fit together like a easily finished jigsaw puzzle. For that alone it is worth watching at least once just so you can make your own mind up about this sequel, just try and forget watching the first Bad Boys movie as your expectations for this one will be too high, leaving you disappointed at the end.
This DVD is available from www.amazon.co.uk for less than a fiver, and for that you get over two hours of so called ‘entertainment’ plus some extra features such as some deleted scenes, stunts, visual effects, music video and production diaries. So for a fiver it is not bad value for money… I said NOT BAD… I would have been disappointed with paying any more for this. * Sometimes rental is better than purchase…!!
** SOUNDTRACK.
As most movies have to have a soundtrack, some being used to keep the audience happy during any of the ‘crappy’ scenes this movie complies with that rule and this soundtrack can be bought from amazon for around £11.00.
