Back to the Future Part II is an excellent follow up to the original. It was made in 1989, 4 years after the first one. It has lots of interesting concepts. Is it better than the first one? Read on...
--- the BASICS ---
Back to the Future Part II is a science fiction film about time travelling, starring Michael Fox and Christopher Lloyd as the 2 main lead characters and directed by Robert Zemeckis. The first film was about the invention of the time machine and Marty travelling by mistake to the year 1955 changing history.
--- the PLOT ---
Everything turned out well after Marty's little adventure in 1955 - his father can now stand up for himself, Biff now washes peoples cars and the McFlys are richer. Now happily in 1985 (BTTF 2 is set in 1985 despite it being made in 1989) the doc suddenly appears and said something happened to their kids in 2015 - 30 years later! The Delorean has undergone a major service and is now capable
of flying, there is no need for any more plutonium as the car now runs on recycled energy from garbage. Together with Jennifer (Marty's girlfriend) they embark on another adventure, this time to the future. It turns out the problem is actually to do with Marty's son (also portrayed by Fox) and he was about to be jailed after being coerced to rob a bank! Can Marty successfully change future history and save his son from the prison? Jennifer was asking too many questions and doc was forced to induce her to sleep - leading to the police from the future to transport her to her future home - the home of the McFlys. What will happen there - will Jennifer bump into her future self? While they are at the McFlys the Delorean was stolen! What's going to happen to the past? Will Marty and doc make it back to 1985? And will everything be the same again? Enjoy the film!
--- the THEORY ---
(The flying car and the hoverboard) This is an interesting concept. For a car or anything for that matter to hover, there must be a way to break gravity. So either we discover some anti-gravitrons or the roads are all coated with massive magnets and the cars / boards as well and they repel each other. It's very unlikely to ever happen. A much more realistic concept would be a driverless car - shame it's not mentioned.
(The future home) In many respects this is already coming true - massive TV screens with multiple channels per view, indoor cordless phones, the commonplace of microwave ovens. Some are in the process of being introduced - fingerprint door entry for example. But some will never come true - the fax machine will not be as ubiquitous as they suggest, there will probably never be ovens that enlarge the size of pizzas etc.
(A rubbish powered car) Possible? Who knows. But what I definitely know is that rubbish will not produce any jigawatts of energy in many ways other than atom fission - and I really doubt a "Mr Fusion", the size of a 1.5L bottle will produce that much energy.
--- what I THOUGHT --- (!!SPOILERS!!)
When I was small I really liked BTTF2 - in fact I thought this was the best of the trilogy with all the nice technology and colour portrait of the future. Then as I grew I started the like the alternative, darker 1985 more before now I truly recognise the first film as probably the best of the three. However this is not to say BTTF2 is not a good film - not at all. It is good in that it "rolls" 3 hugely different timescales into one movie - starting in 2015, then moving back to 1985 and ending in 1955. It is even better in my opinion that it didn't "end" properly but instead remains unfinished so the audience had to wait for the 3rd part.
--- CONCLUSION ---
BTTF2 is an excellent film. It may not be as good as the second one but is still definitely up there with the best of the sci-fi films. Its portrayal of the future may not be accurate but they got most of the things - only disappointingly predicting that everyone would still use payphones which would be ubiquitous by 2015. Other than that the film poses a lot of intriguing questions about time travel (see my BTTF1 review) and seeing the 1980's believe into what the future holds is definitely entertaining.
