This review is on the 1985, Academy award winning, Back to the Future. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Steven Spielberg, the films star Michael J. Fox as teenager Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as scientist Dr. Emmett L. Brown. This was one of my all time childhood favourites, and to this day is still in my top ten of all time. It had everything one would want from an action film, action, drama, edge of the seat excitement and comedy. I think most people would agree that Back to the Future was a ground breaking Sci-fi film. Everything from the special effects to the storyline would be of much envy of the modern day films. Furthermore, I don't know about anyone else, but the first instalment was by far my favourite, because it was fresh and new, and we as viewers didn't no what to expect.
Plot:
Marty McFly is a young teenager growing up in Hill Valley, California. One day he gets a phone call from his good mate Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown (Lloyd) telling him to meet him at 1:15pm in the morning at the Twin Pines Mall Parking lot. That night, having waken up, Marty meets Doc at the parking lot were doc shows Marty his Delorean, which he has somehow converted into a time machine. Marty is told to videotape the experiment to see whether the car actually works, however
before he does so a group of Libyan terrorists track to Doc, who had stolen Plutonium from them. The altercation leads Doc being shot and Marty jumping into the time machine. Trying to escape from the terrorists, Marty speeds to 88 mph, when all of a sudden he is transported back into time, to November 5, 1955. Now in the year 1955, Marty accidentally runs into his dad, who is a teenager. He catches his dad spying on his future mother (Lorraine), however being distracted his dad falls from the tree. Meanwhile, Lorraine's dad is driving home and is on the verge of run over Marty's dad, however Marty intervenes and instead gets knocked down by the car, and his dad runs away. Marty had now changed the momentum of the space time continuum and has accidentally altered history. If Marty was never there, his dad would have got run over and been taken to Lorraine's house, were Lorraine would fall in love with him. Having been treated by his mother, Marty goes to search for Doc, to help him try and get back to the future, however he must first convince Doc of who he his. After some persuasion, Doc tells Marty to stay at his house, so he isn't seen by anyone; however he later tells Doc he saw his mum and dad. Doc and Marty must now try and get Lorraine and his dad to kiss at the school dance, otherwise Marty and his siblings will seize to exist. Will Marty succeed, or his he about to be History?
Characters:
Marty McFly (Fox): Marty is the lead character in the film, he's the young teenager, who accidentally goes back into time and accidentally runs into his parents, and must now re alter history, before history wipes out. His character is cool, hip and very down to earth, I always thought his character was like that of Zack from Saved by the Bell. American Movies had a tendency of creating hip cool teenage characters for their films during the 80's and early 90's, which we don't see much of anymore. Fox's character was brilliant throughout the film, his comical performance and his serious attitude made him fun and fresh to watch. His characters also very resourceful and clever, a when things go wrong, he hatches a plan to make things right. He's the character that everyone envies a great life, gorgeous girlfriend and a flying car. However, he's also very hot headed, and when someone calls him "Chicken", he goes into a fit of rage, in some cases doing stupid things.
Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown (Lloyd):
Doc is also another lead character in the film; he's the fun hip cool scientist that you wished you had as a granddad. The whole time travelling car was his invention, which he accidentally got one day when he fell of the toilet seat and banged his head. He's got both child and adult personalities, and I think to some extent see's Marty as both a younger version of himself and a son he wished he always had.
George is Marty's dad both in the present and in the past. At the start of the Film, George is the low esteemed man, whom is constantly bullied by Biff. When Marty goes back into time, he sees what his dad was like as a teenager. He was a loner, kept to himself, a nerd and someone who was easy to pick on. His dad had always had a fascination with Lorraine, yet without that accident she doesn't even no who he is. George grows as a person and as a character throughout the film, and as the film progresses becomes more confident to ask out Lorraine as well as stick up against Biff.
Special Effects:
For a film made way back in 1985, it had some of the best special effects I have ever seen, and there is surprise because Spielberg produced it. Everything from the car going back to the future, to the lightning strike scene was perfectly done. As well as the special effects the sets were awesome, how they got the Hill Valley set to change from that of the 80's to that of the 50's was surreal.
My Thoughts:
I loved this film, and why I shouldn't, it personifies everything that is the 80's and everything that defines young person's fantasies. Back to the future had everything that made the film pulsating from start to end; there was no single scene that made it boring. It was past paced action from start to finish. The story was pure genius, they may have had time travel films before this, but they did it in such a unique and cool way that made you want to watch this film, just to see what it was about. The films story was even better with a great cast, particularly Marty and Doc, who had such a great chemistry as characters that it seemed so real. All round a brilliant film, that has something for everyone, its fun for the entire family, and if you haven't seen it yet then where have you been.

I watched this film for the first time a few months back, I thought it was really good but think the whole thing with the main charactor and his mum is bit weird.
