Back to the Future DVD Back To The Future is a film that sits in the hearts of many as a classic of the 1980s, one of those films that 'they just don't make any more'. It is a time-travelling adventure with some intense and panicky acting from Michael J Fox and some quirky mad scientist behaviour from Christopher Lloyd. It was groundbreaking in terms of its scientific ideas when it was released in 1985 to a very receptive audience, and made instant stars of its cast. It also features a glorious soundtrack including Huey Lewis' 'Power Of Love'.
The Plot
In 1988, teenager Marty McFly meets mad scientist Doc Brown, who claims to have created a machine capable of time travel - the DeLorean, equipped, with funky gadgets and whirring noises! Keen to avert a catastrophe, Marty uses the plutonium-charged car to go back in time - to 1955!!! Thus begins a tangled web of characters from Marty is not sure are form the past, present or future, including his teenage parents (!!!) When he affects his own future inadvertently, Marty must find a way to settle the historical balance or risk going back to a future he simply does not exist in!
The Cast
Michael J Fox is brilliant as the hyperactive teenage American with angst issues who is being harassed by the local bully. His ability to persuade the viewer that Marty McFly accidentally falls into such a ridiculous adventure is laudable. Christopher Lloyd is brilliant as the eccentric Doc Brown, and plays up to the camera without actually looking at it or involving the audience. His interaction with Fox is the main cause of the two sequels being so popular. Lea Thompson plays the love interest, and does so subtly and from the sidelines - just what the role required. Crispin Glover is also noteworthy as George McFly, Marty's father.
The rest of the supporting cast perform admirably in a film where it appears they work very hard to make it look an easy film to be in.
My Opinion
Back To The Future is a classic tale which will be a favourite of many for years to come. It will be for me. You would not be hard pushed to find technical errors, but it is more the entertainment factor of this film which appeals. I really like this film, and rate it as 4 stars out of 5.
The Extras include rare behind the scenes look at how the film was made, as well as a short piece revealing some of the secrets. 'Making the Trilogy Chapter 1' explores the film in relation to the further two films, and there is a version of the film with commentary from director Robert Zmeckis and producer Bob Gale.
The DVD is currently available from amazon.co.uk for £4.97 new and £1.35 used.
