Without a shadow of a doubt this selection is the best i have ever seen. I picked up the complete collection plus the lost tales set for around £80 and i have never looked back. A pilot, five seasons, a mini series, a set of 3 spin off films and then in the extra collection from Amazon there is also the more recent lost tales included.
Firstly, this series beats its main competitor (star trek) with a stick. It came out against TNG and what made this series far more enjoyable is the use of an actual storyline. The ark covers all five series, with points at the end making you think 'oh that why that happened all the way back in season one'. DS9 seems to attempt to compete in this story ark structure but pails in comparison to Straczynski's intricate plot.
The story is not the only brillant feature. The acting is superb, especially when Bruce Boxleinter comes into his own by late season two/early season three, and Claudia Christians portrayal of Ivanova is truly magnificent.
The alien artefacts and costumes are superb, with the strange Vorlon encounter suit gracefully disturbing, and stations Star Furies are magnificent fighters.
The only sci-fi show that comes close to competing is the revamped Battlestar Galactica and this even surpasses that genius. Where Moore's TNG ( he was producer on many episdoes) failed to compete, he has learnt his lesson and taken on the brillant complexities of this fantastic show and created his own masterpiece in BSG.

Quick review of Babylon 5 - The Complete Universe (DVD)
One of the best sci-fi series ever, because of its renowned story arches linking the different series together. Possibly the best sci-fi story line, some incredible space battles, deep and interesting characters all set in a vivid universe. What more could you want?
If you haven't seen this then it’s definitely worth watching, but it's not the kind of series just to pick up and watch one episode. You need to watch through all the series for it to fully come together. Could be too much of a commitment for some.
A lot of TV, but very good TV.
***Watch out for amazon deals every couple of months for £80ish new. ...

Babylon 5 is the story of an Earth space station set 200 year into the future, 10 years after a great war between mankind and the alien race the minbari. The idea is that the space station Babylon 5 is a place where the main five races in the universe can have a semi-neutral ground to represent their home worlds.
The series started in 1993 and at the time the special effects of the space craft were unique in as much as they ...

Advantages: Complex characters and plots Disadvantages: Plots possibly too complex for casual viewers
Babylon 5 is a well thought out series that gripped viewers with its complex plot lines and well developed characters. Science fiction fans can enjoy the changes that take place in the characters, especially Londo and G'Kar, as the stories are told. Viewers less devoted to the series might be confused by some parts of episodes since many plot lines continue through many episodes, for example the war with the shadows or the revolution against President ... ...lighter sides of the characters and contained humorous situations. I personally rank Babylon 5 right up with Star Trek as a contribution to science fiction. Babylon 5 developed a universe much in the same way as Star Trek with aliens that had unique cultures that viewers can appreciate.. ...

In 1994 STAR TREK had to take a backseat to this science-fiction series, created by Michael Straczynski. The Babylon 5 space station has become an interplanetary peaceful negotiation centre in the 23rd Century. Humans and aliens attempt to settle differences in a reasonable fashion here under the stewardship of President John J. Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner). This comprehensive boxed set contains every exciting episode from the show. Plus the series 'Crusade' and six feature films.
