whose goal and philosophy is the satisfaction of a child's curiosity through sight and sound. In the main Theatre section of this disc you'll find lots of simple shapes, primary colours and favourite toys passing across the screen. Unlike the simpler earlier releases, this is focused on the works of Vincent Van Gogh, who is here represented by a blue sock puppet! To begin with the video seems like something of a nature documentary with flowers in bloom and animals on the move, before we're taken through the colours of the rainbow with sections devoted to the individual colours. For example in Yellow, there are toy chicks, sunflowers, lemons and children playing in yellow paper shavings. All the while, The Baby Einstein Music Box Orchestra play us music from Van Gogh's era such asThe Blue Danube Waltz,The William Tell Overture,Swan LakeandFlight of the Bumble Bee. This is a slight advancement in expectation of your child from the more basic initial releases but has a Video Tutorial to help the parent understand how it all works. On the DVD:Baby Van Goghis the name of the feature itself, but from the Main Menu you can enter a Concert Hall to replay the musical cues from the main show. There's also an Art Exhibit of each of the featured Van Gogh paintings, a Resources section with the aforementioned Video Tutorial and a Toy Chest crediting all the toys used, just in case a certain someone wants one of their own. --Paul Tonks

Advantages: Suberb acting, dynamic direction, original writing, excellent cinematography and very enjoyable. Disadvantages: None
"VanGogh" DVD directed by Maurice Pialat. Production year 1991. Classification 15 years and over.
I love films from other countries and I enjoyed this one very much.
It is a dramatization of Vincent VanGogh's life, the Post Impressionist painter. It is not an attempt to depict the whole of his life but rather a part of it.
There are other VanGogh films out there and this one joins them as another interpretation that has it's own distinct flavour and and yet shares the similar merits of valuing this great artist.
VanGogh is played by actor Jacques Dutronc and his performance is a good and I thought a non stereo-typical VanGogh. The only problem with that is if you have as I do a strong idea of what Vincent VanGogh might be like you may feel at times in the film that that he's not playing him correctly. But I felt that ...

Advantages: Interesting to see colour footage Disadvantages: None, really
This DVD is part of the History Channel World War II in Colour. It is the story (shown in colour) of how the people of the USA and Britain coped on the homefront, whilst the service personnel of both countries were away fighting against the Axis countries in what must have seemed like the four corners of the globe.
The Atlantic, the Pacific, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the far East, Australasia, and so forth.
The first chapter of the DVD is entitled "making do."
Because the programme was created for the American audience, it begins not at the start of the homefront in Britain, but with the homefront in America, which was basically created only when Pearl Harbour was attacked by the Japanese. Suddenly, America new what it was like to face a relentless enemy who seemed implacable and incapable ...
Advantages: A well-presented exhibition and superb collection of works Disadvantages: Can get very busy, especially at weekends
with whom he he surrounded himself.
The first section covers the paintings executed in the Netherlands and includes one his most famous works "The Potato Eaters" (1885). This was his firt large scale work featuring multiple figures. The genral feel of these works is somewhat dull and gloomy. These works feature countryside and peasant scenes.
The next section covers the works he produced whilst living in Paris. During this period, his brother, Theo, was also in Paris and working for an international art dealer. Theo introduced Vincent to the work of the Impressionist artisis such as Monet and this had qutie an effect on VanGogh, causing him to use brighter colours and examining the effect of light on what he saw.
In 1886 VanGogh moved to Arles in southern France and this period forms the next section of works. He invited his friend ...
