Director: Chris Noonan Writers: Dick King-Smith, George Miller Chris Noonan Narrator: Roscoe Lee Browne. Stars: James Cromwell, Magda Szubanski, Christine Cavanaugh, Roscoe Lee Browne, Zoe Burton, Miriam Margolves, Hugo Weaving, Russi Taylor and Doris Grau.
Released in 1995 this cracking Australian movie, using real life animals combined with CGI to create a great entertaining film and probably the reason why millions of people gave up eating bacon….
**MAIN CHARACTERS**
Babe the pig…(voiced by Christine Cavanaugh) is the little guy with big ideas about becoming the first ever sheep herding pig.
Farmer Arthur Hoggett, (played by James Cromwell) is known as 'the Boss' by all the farm animals. For some reason he doesn't say much, using facial expressions to show his emotions. He simply plods through life under the guidance of his wife Esme,
Esme Hoggette, (played by Magda Szubanski) is the glue who holds
the farm together but she doesn't care for Babe that much and only see him as dinner.
Maa, (voiced by Miriam Flynn) is the old and very wise ewe who takes a shine to the little pig.
Fly, (voiced by Miriam Margolyes) is the female sheepdog who takes Babe under her wing, so to speak, after her litter of pups are taken from her.
Rex, (voiced by Hugo Weaving) is the mate of Fly and the father to her pups. He is Hoggetts best sheepdog and does not like the fact that a pig may take his place, he also hates all sheep and sees them as inferior.
Ferdinand the duck, (voiced by Danny Mann) is one neurotic, stressed out character. He feels unwanted around the farm and does many odd things to try to be seen as useful, like destroying the farmers alarm clock and pretending to be a rooster, waking the farm in the mornings.
Duchess the spoilt farm cat, (voiced by Russi Taylor) is seen as a bit of an evil character who has hated Babe from day one. She tells Babe all about the horrors of how humans eat pigs and that is what will happen to him.
Also…
Watch out for the Singing Mice… who appear somewhere on the screen in between each chapter, usually singing some silly little song in a high pitched voice….
**BRIEF PLOT**
When the runt of a litter of piglets becomes entangled in a human world it is now wonder the little mites mind is confused.
Babe is a piglet who, after being won on a 'guess the weight' competitions, end up living on a farm with Farmer Hoggett.
Hoggett puts Babe in with his sheepdog, Fly, and her pups, together with Fly's mate Rex.
When Babe watches how the sheepdogs round up the sheep he soon decides that that is what he wants to do, to become a sheep dog…well sheep pig anyway.
With Babe then having to convince Hoggett that he can do the same job as a sheep dog he starts by rounding up the chickens, then moves onto the sheep.
Hoggett is that impressed that he decides to enter Babe into the forthcoming sheep dog trials, to the amazement and amusement of the other farmers.
**IN CONCLUSION**
Well, what a funny movie. I watched this with my kids and they sat quietly through the entire film, (which all parents of a 6 and 9 year old know is like a little miracle unravelling in front of your television). They simply loved the little pig and the adorable animals voices. They laughed out loud when the little mice appeared with their squeaky voices, (the mice, not my kids). Anyway.. I also sat and watched it, enjoying it immensely, considering it is aimed at children, I certainly laughed as much as the kids, if not more so.
The voice-overs for the animals was perfect and really brought the hilarity to the screen with such brilliance, especially Babe, the adorable pig with the big heart and small voice.
The story is well written and the idea of using a pig to work as a sheep dog is top notch…with hilarious consequences.
You will know what the ending is way before you get there but it still wont put you off watching the movie right through as it is entertaining and comical throughout.
Would I recommend it…? God Yes… I certainly would… especially for a wet Sunday afternoon and your stuck in with the kids…. It is a fun family movie with just the right amount of everything needed to keep the audience happy throughout….
Go for it… then see if your kids will eat bacon afterwards…?
