A story where the lead role is played by a piglet called Babe. When I saw this film in my local video shop, I was very curious, so I had to rent it. I was not sure that I would like a film, which is full of animals that can talk. I was astounded to see how wonderfully this worked. James Cromwell also stars in the film as Farmer Hogget (Babes Owner)
All the animals have their own personalities, which make them more human.
A few of the other animals that accompany Babe as strong characters are as follows.
There are two working sheepdogs (collies). Rex the male is very masterful, abrupt, proud and loud but soon the hard dog façade fades. Fly the female is motherly, caring and gentile. There is a very cunning and sly cat, a duck that must have been raised by Calamity Jane, as he is so clumsy and finally a trio of singing mice.
The story starts with a heart-wrenching scene where Babe is taken from his mother and siblings. He is distraught.
Then he becomes a prize at a rural fete, if people guess his correct weight they win him.
The winner is Farmer Hogget and so Babe is delivered to his Farm. Babe is put in the barn where he pines for his mother. Fly the female sheepdog and her adorable puppies share the barn with Babe. Fly hears babe crying and soon her motherly instincts emerge and she comforts Babe, who intern comforts her when her puppies are sold.
Ferdinand the duck becomes one of Babes friends and they get up to all sort of mischief together including when they try to steal Mrs Hogget’s alarm clock. The reason being that Ferdinand wants the cockerel’s job.
One day Farmer Hogget takes Babe with the sheep dogs to the field to round up the sheep. Babe watches and tries to copy what he has seen.
Gradually as time passes Farmer Hogget realises that Babe is not an ordinary Pig but he has intelligence, and so is given the opportunity to try to round up the sheep. Maa the elderly sheep who becomes his friend aids babe in this task.
Babe becomes aware of trouble in the field and when he arrives there are stray dogs attacking the sheep. Farmer Hogget arrives and finds Babe nudging the sheep with his snout; he thinks Babe is the one who has attacked the sheep. Babe is then taken to be destroyed but is saved at the last minute.
Mrs Hogget leaves the farm for a few days and this is when Farmer Hogget trains Babe for the national sheepdog championships. Reading the rules he finds that it does not state in the rules that a pig cannot compete so he fills in the dogs name as Pig.
Babe is overjoyed until one evening the cat tells Babe that pigs are bred for human consumption and that this will never change. Babe then asks the sheepdog if humans really eat pigs when this is confirmed Babe runs away.
This is as much of the story as I can tell you without spoiling your enjoyment of this true masterpiece. This film is a bit of an emotional roller coaster one minute you’ll cry the next you’ll laugh.
This film is an excellent film for the kids and the whole family. Dare you to see whether dad has a tear in his eye.
