+++++++++++++++++++++ MY OPINION +++++++++++++++++++++
You may be thinking i am being harsh with this review but the first time i watched it i could not believe what i was seeing. I had to put myself through watching it again to be certain that this film, far from being completely unfunny and uncute, is actually deeply twisted with regards to the treatment of the animals in the plot.
It is unbelievable that this film is described as a family comedy, and even more surprising that this film actually has a good review. It's about as far from a comedy as is possible.
++++++++++++++++++ PLOT ++++++++++++++++++
First of all, Mr Hoggett nearly dies in a horrific well accident (good start), and so is unable to run the farm. Mrs Hogget (who is constantly made fun of throughout the film purely due to the fact she is a large woman) and Babe go the city. The city they enter views animals as outcasts, but finally they find an illegal animal-'friendly' hotel, where Babe is bullied by the other animal residents. Nice.
When the hotel is found by the police, all of the animals get evicted out of the hotel, including an elderly monkey who seems to be suffering from depression. The film also has a special treat where Babe, and a dog in a mini wheelchair (this is for real, i'm afraid), are chased by a vicious bulldog until the bulldog falls of a bridge and nearly drowns (a common theme it seems). They then become friends.
I think the idea that George Miller (the director) had was to create the idea of a huge contrast between the environment at the farm compared to that of the city, which i suppose he did. In a way.
So in conclusion, do not watch this tactless, awful film unless you have small children who will simply appreciate the cute animals.
However, if you really feel you want to see this travesty of a film (maybe just to see how bad it is ) you can either buy it for around Ģ7 or it'll probably be on over Christmas (what a perfect film to ruin christmas spirit!)
Extras on the DVD (in case you haven't had enough by now): Babe screensaver Production Notes Cast And Filmmakers Notes Theatrical Trailers
But I'm sure you can make up your own mind
