As a kid like many of you comic readers I loved the Batman collection. I remember the first time I saw the original Batman film I most egmit I fell in love with it even though it was aimed at an older audience rather than it's loyal younger comic and cartoon followers.
Gotham City seems to be a futuristic, dark, apocalypse bound landscape, It's citizen’s lives in fear of crime and what appears to be a new threat. The notorious Batman played brilliantly by Michael Keaton. Bruce Wayne (Batman) lives in a luxurious mansion, outfitted with a state of the art Batcave which is kept running by Alfred Bruce Wayne's life long butler.
As Gotham City is still in fear of the notorious Batman its crime rate begins to soar due to the Joker played by Jack Nicholson. Jack find's himself battling the Gotham police at the local Chemical factory. Fighting Batman Jack falls into a vat of chemicals, which bleach his skin and turn him into the criminally insane Joker.
After this the joker begins to kill off his enemies and Batman begins to win the publics affection. The Joker then gets one up on Batman by offering the citizens of Gotham City 1 million dollars in a give away only to reveal that it is all a part of his plan to bring Gotham and it's innocent citizens to its knees.
It also turns out that Jack was the criminal who gunned down Bruce Waynes parent's infront of him as a child which this tragedy he turns into Batman. And what is notable about this scene is the catch phrase said to the young man clinching his dead parents by Jack "Don’t dance with the devil in the pale moonlight".
Tim Burton's vision for Gotham City may be dark, but it sets the tone for what the movie truly is a dark, depressing story about morality and the battle between good and evil, especially in the eye of public opinion. The violence in this film is at a bare minimum, but when Batman and the Joker finally get into it at the end, the movie's climax is worth the wait.
If you are like me and a fan of the comic books you will be pleased with the results from Tim Burton's reimagination of what turned out to be a campy, 1960s sitcom which I personally hated. It made a joke of the caped crusader. This film saved the almost dead original series.
In my opinion this is the best Batman film of the series without Tim Burton’s Batman I don’t think there would be the Spider Mans, Incredible Hulks, or X-men films.
It is definitely worth a look if you see it in your local video store then get it out. If your a fan of the comic books or the latter super hero movies then have a look at this film because it really paved the way for the X-men and Spiderman films.
