This classic comic book tale of good versus evil is the best of the Batman series, which has already seen three differnet actors play the lead role! This, the original film, was made in 1989 and starred two absolutely amazing actors playing the super hero and super villain.

The scene is set that in Gotham City, an underworld boss plans to let his "Number One", Jack Napier (Nicholson), take the rap for some dodgy dealings. Jack visit the chemical factory and soon realises that he is in the middle of a set-up, and a fight between the police and the hoodlums then begins. Then from nowhere, a mysterious cloaked figure, known only as Batman (Keaton), appears on the walkway above a vat of acid and blocks Napier. A struggle begins and Napier falls over the edge, but Batman can't keep hold of him and he falls to what is assumed to be his death.

Meanwhile, back at the local newspaper office, a new reporter, Vicki Vale (Basinger), begins work and starts probing into the reports of this so-called Batman. She also catches the eye of multi-millionaire bachelor, Bruce Wayne, who just happens to be the caped crusader. For a while, things go quiet in Gotham, but the talk of Batman continues: Is he friend or foe?

Then, the super villain known as the Joker begins his campaign of terror. The Joker is in fact Jack Napier after plastic surgery which has given him a permanent smile, and changed his personality somewhat: from your everyday bad guy, to the super villain that everyone loves to hate. He first kills his boss who had already stolen his girlfriend, and then takes the position at the head of the organisation. He then kills someone with a poison dart and then begins sending out poisoned health and beauty products which were made at the chemical plant. But his main objective is to kill Batman, who he believes dropped him in the vat of acid.

This film was the first action film that I ever saw, and I loved every minute of it. Nicholson and Keaton were both outstanding, and to this day, there has been no better villain, and no better Batman than those played by the respective actors. Basinger was entering a shaky period in her career and is underused in the film, but the on screen rivalry between hero and villain makes the pace unstoppable. The only problem with this film is the lack of special effects, but remember, this was 1989!

I agree with you on this one - definitely the best of the series. Jack Nicholson was excellent as The Joker and the film was stylish and original. Cheers, Phil :O)
