Batman & Robin…..The Deadly Duo…

When you see the words “The Deadly Duo”, you automatically think of Batman and Robin, those two guys that run around in tights..

So I remember well the first time my eyes glimpsed a Batman comic, I was still at Primary school and I spotted it on the rack at our local shop. I was taken aback by the strange outfit they both wore and decided to buy the comic just to see who these two people were. That was it I was hooked instantly to the Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder.

I did often wonder though about a grown man sharing his house with a young boy and dressing up in a costume that involved tights. I was also a bit wary of the butler..Still I suppose it’s whatever turns you on!.

The real names of our two heroes, well Batman was called Bruce Wayne and Robin was called Dick Grayson and to be honest in that little number that he ran around in he looked a right Dick!! They lived in Bruce Waynes mansion and it was really impressive. It had the batcave where of course the Batmobile was parked. Now this was some car but I doubt if he could even insure that baby in Belfast today…

So how did our two super heroes know that Gotham City was in trouble, simple the large circle with a bat was projected high in the sky over Gotham. This bat signal was actually to become very prominent on T-shirts in our neighbourhood…Batman was starting to take off and a new Batman comic was out nearly every other week.. He was starting to become a hero to me at this young age but I was still a bit wary of becoming to attached to a man who dressed up, and why did he wear that thing over his face, was he hiding something…

The enemies of the Deadly Duo, well a different one turned up each week. You would have thought the message would have been passed on that you don’t mess with Batman. Anyway my favourite enemies would be the Joker, no not an ice lolly but a right weirdo who paints his face and has a bigger mouth than Mick Jagger. The penguin, didn’t Danny De Vito really suit that part in the film. And of course the every slinky and sexy, no not Joanna Hudson, I am talking about none other than Catwoman….Now excuse me but was this a babe or what. Now her costume was not bought at an Ann Summers party, that’s for sure, this lady could have used her whip on me any night she wanted.

The comic book then became a television series with Adam West, which I myself thought was truly woeful. All that “Zap” and “Wham” when they were fighting someone, it just killed the whole Batman thing. I also think the effects in that television series were nothing short of dreadful….

Now the Batman movie when it came out started all the Batman mania over again because I remember buying my son a Batman T-shirt at the time. Micheal Keaton was the perfect actor for the Movie and played the part very well. Scene of the film, Michelle standing in that tight Catwoman costume going “Miaow”…

Now Batman, not to be outdone by Joanna Hudson's suspender belt had his utility belt, handy little number this was. He had everything in that little belt, it was like watching Paul Daniels pull a rabbit out of a hat. He also had the Batmobile, the Batcopter and loads of gadgets like the batarang which in effect was bat shaped boomarang.

What I often wondered was why he was fighting crime, he was a millionaire and never got a penny in commission for the number of times he saved Gotham. Could we maybe see in our world the likes of Richard Branson dressing up in a cool outfit and roaming the streets of London late at night searching for villians…

So to conclude, I loved Batman, not like that ok!..When I was growing up I had a large collection of Batman comics that I had built up over the years. At an older age I still didn’t want to part with them. I think I gave them all away to a local children’s home, god I bet they are worth a fortune now!!

Anyway thanks again for the read, if your good I may just bring you that other guy in tights tomorrow..Superman……Your friend online………

Art……..03rd Sept..2001…….Dedicated to all the folk at Gotham City..
