I was curious what Sam Mendez would do after Revolutionary road,a film that i thought was well told. I was rather unimpressed with his American beauty but after watching Revolutionary road and now Away we go,i have to say he knows what he is doing!
Away We Go is a simple film.A film about an expecting couple looking to move away from their previous home to a new place.Burt(an ordinary insurance sales person)and Verona suddenly make the decision of moving away after Burt's parents decide to move away to europe just before the due date of their child's birth.
The not so young couple have a few options and the treatment of the film somehow invites the audience to accompany them through their journey. Its a journey you don't mind taking, mainly due to the presence of such interesting characters. The character of Verona's ex-boss is truly hilarious and depicts a dysfunctional family in a lighter mood. We are then introduced to a rather annoying Lily(played well by Maggie Gyllenhaal) and her mad theories about life and parenthood. The dialogues are perfect and realistic;funny in the regular daily life basis.
The film reaches a high when they move to Montreal where there college friends live.Their story somehow manages to touch and move you and you realise that the film has actually gone to a different height altogether. This is a simple film, beautifully told with lots of emotions. The performances are realistic and it seems like they are a couple in real life. The ending is very fitting and will leave you with a small smile.Parents and soon to be parents will love it more! The soundtrack deserves a special mention here,it is soothing and goes completely with the feel of the film.
This is a beautiful journey you won't mind joining!
