master of the no-commitment seduction - until he runs into an unexpected dead end when he meets Charlotte Fielding (Winona Ryder). Charlotte is half Will's age and twice his match, a free spirit yearning to get out and taste the excitement of adult life. Indulging his interest in Charlotte, Will expects another quick and easy romance. But nothing about Will and Charlotte's encounters are quick and easy; instead they are rife with intergenerational clashes, differing philosophies and an inexplicably urgent sense of sensuality and connection. Then just as Will attempts to escape from the relationship with his usual line of not promising forever, Charlotte provides a surprise response: she has her own reasons to believe things can't last. Shattering Will's preconceptions about women, sex and responsibility, real love - exhilarating, heartbreaking, enduring love - changes everything.

autumn in New York. Richard Gere stars as restaurateur/lady's man Will, while Winona Ryder plays the airy-fairy, oh-too-delicate-for-this-world Charlotte. Will is 48, Charlotte is 22, and it just keeps getting creepier: Will actually used to hang out with Charlotte's mom. She plays artily with beads and sparkly things, he notices how elfin and different she is (inspiring such stomach-churning dialogue as "I find you completely unprecedented and therefore utterly unpredictable"), and soon they're in love. Ah, but it's doomed: she has a tumor in her heart (just in case you missed the significance, Charlotte says "I'm sick in my heart"). Does Charlotte have enough time left to teach Will to truly love? While Gere does a stoic job, Ryder spends a lot of time being darling and winsome, aided by the fact that Charlotte has managed to catch one of those special movie diseases where you never look bad or get tubes stuck up your nose. Director Joan Chen doesn't have much of a script to work with, but at least she knows how to pick a cinematographer; the whole movie is shot in gorgeous autumnal colours. Several excellent supporting actors are trapped in this movie: Jill Hennessey and Anthony LaPaglia do their very best, but what can they do in the face of such a sweeping, creepy love?Autumn in New Yorkis nothing if not an earnest movie, and it certainly means well. Much like Charlotte, it seems to cry, "Can you let me love you? Please?". The answer is an emphatic "No". --Ali Davis, Amazon.com

There are some very sensual close-ups of the lovers and some beautiful, romantic scenery, including the falling leaves in New York's Central Park, but these lovers just seem convincing. It's hard to believe that this pair are in love as they just don't work well together.
The story drags on towards the end and really pushes every emotional buttonthe audience has at the end. There is lots 'wring out your hanky stuff' here and it goes over the top at times.
This is a very ordinary weepy type movie. The storyline isn't exactly original and Gere and Ryder are very badly cast as lovers. It's 105 minutes of tugging on the heartstrings.
I personally wouldn't recommend this film to anyone. There isn't anything bad enough in it for me to say it's awful, but its just not very special, if you know what I mean.
Wait until the DVD comes out if you are a Richard Gere fan and spend your money in the pub.
Advantages: On a rainy day, you'll be sitting in a dry place in the theater Disadvantages: Even Gere and Ryder fans can't possibly recommend this dreadful, shmaltzy flick
When MGM did announce that there weren't going to be any advance screenings of "Autumn In New York", rumors started spreading. Director Joan Chen's ("Xiu Xiu") second movie must be a dud. MGM's reasoning was that there are plot twists that needed protecting. I have to say that MGM has a point. I don't want to know the whole story before I go and see a movie, either. Hence, I won't tell you about that sacred plot twist.
Is "Autumn In New York" as ... ...likes Richard Gere and Winona Ryder, it sure is tough to say anything less than favourable about this movie. However, I have to say that how Allison Burnett got away with what looks like a first draft of a script is everybody's guess. There's absolutely no dramatic tension, the characters are stock characters with next to zero development, and the minor characters seem to be added to fluff the whole thing up so that this brittle skeleton of a story ...

Advantages: cinematography Disadvantages: story, lack of chemistry between leads
I saw this 'tearjerker' on a flight coming back from New Zealand in February, and frankly I'd not given it a second thought since I saw an advert in the paper for it and thought 'my god, they've released it in the cinema?'. Frankly it's a straight to video, or straight to the TV to be honest.
However, with heavyweights like Richard Gere and Winona Ryder playing the leads, what else can you expect. Even Elaine Strich thrown in for good measure who ... ...the title) it starts with Ryder celebrating a twenty-something birthday and Gere then appears on the screen. He'd previously dated her late mother, and of course Granny (Strich) is less than happy when Gere starts pursuing Ryder. His reputation as a womanising self-centred restauranteur doesn't exactly make him family material, particularly when Ryder has a serious heart condition which means she'll be lucky to see out her twenties.
Of course there ...

Summary of the film (some information used from the back of the DVD):

My point of view for the film:
It’s a lovely romance taking part in luxurious and fascinating New York. Main parts of this film are Richard Geer and Guinona Rider. The story starts when a young girl (Guinona Rider) is meeting in her birthday party in a very posh restaurant the owner of the restaurant (Richard Geer), a man known around New York as one of the most successful rich men that many women would like to be their girlfriend. ...

DVD Description
Following in a long tradition of Hollywood May-December romances, AUTUMN IN NEW YORK is the story of a pair who finds love when each least expects it. Will Keane (Richard Gere) is a successful restaurant owner and bachelor playboy with more "girlfriends" than he knows what to do with but no serious relationships. He meets Charlotte (Winona Ryder), the daughter of an old flame, and is immediately interested in her. The two develop a casual love affair, but Charlotte has a hidden secret: a terminal heart condition. As the unlikely pair continues the relationship, they grow closer than either could have imagined, proving that love is rarely convenient or easy. While struggling with his feelings toward Charlotte, Will also has to deal with a mystery woman (Vera Farmiga) who holds a secret from his past, and his own sense of mortality as he gets older. AUTUMN IN NEW YORK is an old-fashioned melodramatic love story that makes up for its familiar plot with glossy movie-star performances from Gere and Ryder, plus lush cinematography and elegant direction from actress-turned-director Joan Chen, whose touch makes New York City romantic in a unique and understated way.
