Following in a long tradition of Hollywood May-December romances, AUTUMN IN NEW YORK is the story of a pair who finds love when each least expects it. Will Keane (Richard Gere) is...
more...a successful restaurant owner and bachelor playboy with more "girlfriends" than he knows what to do with but no serious relationships. He meets Charlotte (Winona Ryder), the daughter of an old flame, and is immediately interested in her. The two develop a casual love affair, but Charlotte has a hidden secret: a terminal heart condition. As the unlikely pair continues the relationship, they grow closer than either could have imagined, proving that love is rarely convenient or easy. While struggling with his feelings toward Charlotte, Will also has to deal with a mystery woman (Vera Farmiga) who holds a secret from his past, and his own sense of mortality as he gets older. AUTUMN IN NEW YORK is an old-fashioned melodramatic love story that makes up for its familiar plot with glossy movie-star performances from Gere and Ryder, plus lush cinematography and elegant direction from actress-turned-director Joan Chen, whose touch makes New York City romantic in a unique and understated way.

I saw this 'tearjerker' on a flight coming back from New Zealand in February, and frankly I'd not given it a second thought since I saw an advert in the paper for it and thought 'my god, they've released it in the cinema?'. Frankly it's a straight to video, or straight to the TV to be honest.

However, with heavyweights like Richard Gere and Winona Ryder playing the leads, what else can you expect. Even Elaine Strich thrown in for good measure who plays Ryder's grandmother.

Set in New York (unsurprisingly given the title) it starts with Ryder celebrating a twenty-something birthday and Gere then appears on the screen. He'd previously dated her late mother, and of course Granny (Strich) is less than happy when Gere starts pursuing Ryder. His reputation as a womanising self-centred restauranteur doesn't exactly make him family material, particularly when Ryder has a serious heart condition which means she'll be lucky to see out her twenties.

Of course there would be no film if the attraction weren't mutual and he pursues her, she gives in and they fall in love and well you can guess the rest since it's a tearjerker. Of course it's not as simple as that, there is about an hour plus to fill in after all, and the cinematography is great which is a bonus.

Frankly there's not a tremendous amount of chemistry between the two leads, and you just cannot quite believe what is happening between them. To be honest, if you want to watch a doomed love affair and terminal illness, watch Love Story it's far superior and will have you howling for hours.
