Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me is the follow up to 1997’s International Man of Mystery. Those who say IMOM first will feel right at home, recognising the characters. Those who saw TSWSM first (and that includes me) will soon feel right at home. All the characters are back, Austin Powers (obviously), Dr Evil, Number Two and more. There are even a few new characters, most noticeably Felicity Shagwell and Mini-Me.
Mike Myers stars as not one, not two but three main characters – Powers, Dr Evil and Fat Bastard. He gives a great performance throughout the film and can only be applauded for his efforts. Heather Graham is the new girl and can only be described as “wow”. Cast perfectly, she obviously had fun making the movie. In fact, the whole cast and crew had fun – as revealed by director Jay Roach on the commentary. However, the star of the show is Mini-Me - he steals every scene he's in. Top stuff.
As for the film itself, the plot goes something like this. Dr Evil goes back to 1969 to steal Austin’s mojo. Austin follows him back where he teams up with agent Felicity Shagwell to defeat Dr Evil who also plans to destroy Washington DC using a giant laser. It is actually a lot funnier than it sounds, with jokes a plenty. The focus of the movie isn't the plot, it's the gags and we all know it, right from the credits.
The DVD itself is pretty impressive. It's extras include audio commentary, almost 20 minutes of deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes featurette, "The Dr Evil Story" and Comedy Central's spy-o-graphy, a spoof of A&E's popular "Biography" series, music video Madonna, music video by Lenny Kravitz and music video by Mel B. That's a pretty good list for a fairly old DVD. The commentary is very good and anything with Dr Evil in it is funny.
The movie is presented in anamorphic widescreen. It is in an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 (and not 16:9 like it says on the box) with an average bitrate of around 5.5Mbps. The colours are sharp and bright, fully showing off why DVD is so great.
The audio side of things is just as good with a nice 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack. It may not be The Matrix, but it will give your speakers a nice work out with the songs playing in the background from start to finish.
The (often overlooked) menu screen are animated with some nice little touches. They are easy to navigate and use. If you don't touch any button for 30 seconds, then Dr Evil comes along and reveals some more extras!
You can now pick up this DVD for about a tenner in most shops. It is worth the money just to see Dr Evil and Mini-Me sing "Just the two of us" but luckily there are many other reasons. Highly recommended.

I believe they're making/writing a third movie at the moment. I head Sean Connery might be in it!

Advantages: Supremely funny throughout. Myers is great as three of the top characters. Good sound track. Probably improves upon the original which is noval for a sequel. Disadvantages: maybe just a tad too similiar to the original
