Mike Myers (previously from Saturday Night Live and Wayne’s World) stars in this second outing for 1960’s super-spy Austin Powers. His character is born out of the Bond era but Myers uses it as a parody. It is completely over the top and politically incorrect throughout. The fact that Austin Powers is supposed to be a sex symbol in itself is ludicrous (check out the yellow teeth and the chest hair!).

You only have to watch the opening (naked romp) sequence to this film to get a feel of how serious it’s going to be! Very funny and extremely well choreographed!

The Plot

==

I’ll keep this simple. Well, I’ll have too in any case, as the plot IS simple (no gasps of surprise there then).

This time around Dr Evil build a time machine and returns to the 1969 to steal Austin Power’s mojo (supposedly his sex-drive?!). Without it he is powerless so nips back in time himself with a similar machine provided by the British secret service (how convenient!). What ensues then is farcial adventure with Powers trying to recover his mojo, meeting up with various weird (and wonderfully named!) characters en route.

Don’t expect anything ground breaking here. It’s just a great comedy and doesn’t need a sophisticated plot. The jokes also have a particularly British feel to them which isn’t too surprising when you find out that Myers grew up on a diet of The Goons and Monty Python!

The Characters *****************************========

Myers again reprises his other role in the film as Austin Powers’ nemesis Dr Evil (another tongue in cheek parody of Bond film villains). He is brilliant as usual in both of his roles here. Austin Powers is sex-crazed, naïve and so-so corny that you can’t help but laugh out loud at him., whilst Dr Evil is completely useless in his attempts to conquer the world and dispose of his nemesis. HE still cannot get along with his son, as shown by the early scene they have together on the Jerry Springer show!

We are also introduced to a clone of Dr Evil, Mini-Me, who in true Hollywood fashion is an evil clone. Oh, and he is two foot eight inches tall. So, no parody to Bond films here then … well, apart from the glaringly obvious one to Nick Nack in “The man with the golden gun” that is. Mini-Me is a carbon copy of Dr Evil (he even has identical scars and has a cloned Mr Bigglesworth too, Dr Evils cat). Mini-Me steals some of the best (funniest) parts in the film.

Probably the most controversial character in the film is also played by Myers. The loud, larger than life, Scottish double agent “Fat Bas***d” is without doubt the most crude character in the film. He farts and belches his way through most of his scenes (including the bed scene with Heather Graham … ouch). I think Myers may have gone a little too far with this character!

Austin Powers 2 also shot Heather Graham into the limelight with her role as Felicity Shagwell (“Shagwell by name, very shag well by reputation”) the 1960’s CIA agent who is basically a female version of Austin Powers. She shows in this film how adaptable an actress she is as she pulls off the comedy role seamlessly. Her previous roles (and those since) have been far more serious roles.

Castlist:

Austin Powers – Mike Myers
Dr Evil – Mike Myers
Felicity Shagwell – Heather Graham
Mini-Me – Verne Troyer
Fat Bas***d – Mike Myers
Number Two – Robert Wagner
Young Number Two – Rob Lowe
Vanessa Kensington – Liz Hurley
Robin Swalllows – Gia Carides
Alotta Fagina – Fabiana Udenio
Ivana Humpalot - Kristen Johnston

Verdict *****************************=

This has got to be one of the best (comedy) films you can get out on a wet and cold evening, especially when you’ve got nothing else to do and need cheering up a bit. You can completely turn off your brain for an hour and a half, sit back and laugh until it hurts!

If you’ve seen the first film “International man of mystery” then this is a MUST as it far, far better. Heather Graham makes a much more convincing role alongside Myers than Liz Hurley ever could have. The inclusion of the Mini-Me character adds some of the funnier moments in the film.

Just try and drink some coffee after watching this film!!!

• Favourite line from the film: “I’m Robin Swallows …. my maiden name was Spitz”

• Gross out highlight: Austin Powers drinking the “coffee”

The first time I saw this I was staying with my friend at her dad's and was rather embarassed by the crudeness, although I am not usually like this but her dad was sitting right next to me! Loved the film and can watch it over and over!
