Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me is simply more of the same enjoyable silliness that made the original movie such a surprise hit. And for a sequel to retain even half of the original's quality is quite an achievement.
Mike Myers returns as the bad toothed international man of mystery, and we join the film, with Austin and his lovely wife, Vanessa (Elizabeth Hurley), on their honeymoon. But, horrors, she is not what she appeared to be, and Austin ends up as a bachelor again.
Even worse, Dr. Evil (also Myers) returns to Earth to devise yet another plan to destroy the world. But he realises that he can't beat Powers unless he gets his sex appeal, his mojo, after all a swinger without sex appeal is like a condom with a hole in the wrong end of it. So Dr. Evil goes back to the 1960s to steal the sex appeal from the cryogenically frozen Powers He uses a henchman to do this, one, Fat Bastard (Myers Again!), who is an obnoxiously overweight, Scottish bagpipe playing assassin.
Not to be outdone, the 1990s Powers goes back in time to stop Dr. Evil. When he gets back to the 1960s, he is teamed with Felicity Shagwell (Heather Graham), a CIA agent with an equally active libido and a supreme participator of the swinging lifestyle.
What makes this movie work, as in the first, is the inspired foolishness of Myers. Austin Powers thrives on the foundation that it really has no redeeming social value whatsoever. It is just pure, wacky comedy.
Myers' Dr. Evil has more screen time here than in the first movie, and that is a good thing. Just as with the original, some of the funniest moments in the film are when Dr. Evil argues with his son, Scott (Seth Green). And their battles are even better in this sequel because Dr. Evil has a clone, one-eighth his size, that he calls "Mini-Me", who turns out to be a vicious little man who wants to kill Scott.
Again, as in the first Myers steals the show, if not only for the addition of Fat Bastard, his wanting to eat Mini Me is hilarious. Seth Green is again good as Dr Evil's 'not so Evil' son. Graham as Shagwell is commendable as is the rest of the cast, to round it off well.
On the down side, this movie does rehash most of the gags and puns from the first movie only in a different manner, the 'Shh' gag between Evil and Scott in the first, is simply reworked to a 'Zip it' gag for the same characters in this one. The dialogue is not quite as funny because it's no longer original, we've just heard it before.
But in saying that the movie is definitely more daring than the first, perhaps as all sequels are that are trying to eclipse a successful first movie. The bedroom scene between Shagwell and Fat Bastard immediately springs to mind as being more daring.
But if you liked the first movie, then you will probably like this one, and if you didn't like the first one then, you can still watch this one just for a good funny movie.
The DVD itself is quite impressive with an impressive array of features. These include:
- Feature Length Commentary - Theatrical Trailers - Music Videos - Behind The Scenes Featurette - Deleted Scenes
It also contains various text only features and a Hidden menu. I bought the DVD just after it came out on region 2 and paid £19.99, but I have seen it for less on the net, but even at £19.99 pretty good value for money I'd say.

Advantages: Supremely funny throughout. Myers is great as three of the top characters. Good sound track. Probably improves upon the original which is noval for a sequel. Disadvantages: maybe just a tad too similiar to the original
