If you don't thinkAustin Powers: International Man of Mystery(1997) is one of the funniest ... more
movies of the 1990s, maybe you should be packed
into a cryogenic time chamber and sent back to the
decade whence you came. Perhaps it was the 1960s -
the shagadelic decade when London hipster Austin
Powers scored with gorgeous chicks as a fashion
photographer by day, crime-fighting international
man of mystery by night. Yeah, baby, yeah! But
when Powers's arch nemesis, Dr. Evil, puts himself
into a deepfreeze and travels via time machine to
the late 1990s, Powers must follow him and foil
Evil's nefarious scheme of global domination. Mike
Myers plays dual roles as Powers and Dr. Evil,
with Elizabeth Hurley as his present-day sidekick
and karate-kicking paramour. A hilarious spoof of
'60s spy movies, this colourful comedy actually
gets funnier with successive viewings, making it a
perfect home video for gloomy days and randy
nights. Oh, behave!"I put the grrr in swinger,
baby!" a deliciously randy Powers coos near the
beginning ofThe Spy Who Shagged Me(1999), and if
the imagination of Austin creator Mike Myers seems
to have sagged a bit, his energy surely hasn't.
This friendly, go-for-broke sequel finds our man
Austin heading back to the '60s to keep perennial
nemesis Dr. Evil (Myers again) from blowing up the
world - and, more importantly, to get back his
mojo, that man-juice that turns Austin into
irresistible catnip for women, especially American
spygirl Felicity Shagwell (a pretty but vacant
Heather Graham). The plot may be irreverent and
illogical, the jokes may be bad, and the scenes
may run on too long, but it's all delivered
sunnily and with tongue firmly in cheek. Myers
teams Dr. Evil with a diminutive clone, Mini-Me
(Verne J. Troyer), then pulls a hat trick by
playing a third character, the obese and
disgusting Scottish assassin Fat Bastard.Despite
symptoms of sequelitis,Austin Powers in
Goldmember(2002) is must-see lunacy for devoted
fans of the shagadelic franchise. Unfortunately,
the law of diminishing returns is in full effect:
for every big-name cameo and raunchy
double-entendre, there's an equal share of
redundant shtick, juvenile scatology, and
pop-cultural spoofery. All is forgiven when the
hilarity level is consistently high, and Mike
Myers -returning here as randy Brit spy Austin,
his nemesis Dr. Evil, the bloated Scottish
henchman Fat Bastard, and new Dutch disco-villain
Goldmember - thrives by favouring comedic chaos
over coherent plotting. Once they've tossed Austin
into the disco fever of 1975 (where he's sent to
rescue his father, gamely played by Michael
Caine), Myers and director Jay Roach seem vaguely
adrift with old and new characters, including
Verne Troyer's Mini-Me and pop star Beyoncé
Knowles as Pam Grier-ish blaxpo-babe Foxxy
Cleopatra. A bit tired, perhaps, but Powers hasn't
lost his mojo.

Review of Austin Powers - International Man Of Mystery DVD by TheNeil

Advantages: See review

...Such was the case with Austin Powers - International Man of Mystery. Gentleman spy (and all round swinger, baby) Austin Powers has managed to track down the dastardly Dr Evil, but sees his arch-nemesis escape by going into cryogenic suspension. What's a hip young agent to do? Maybe he can beat the doctor at his own game... Unfrozen in the year 1997, Austin finds a world far removed from the swinging 60's he left behind 30 years before - Chicks don't ...
...stiff and starchy Agent Kensington, Austin must save the world once more... Aimed as a direct James Bond parody, Austin Powers is an excellent comedy that perfectly captures the look and feel of the 60's Bond outings. The outrageous story elements are all included and are actually well used together to form a complete story (unlike so many films that simply attempt to parody individual scenes and then link them together poorly ie Scary Movie). There's ... Read review

Review of Austin Powers - International Man Of Mystery DVD by shanecahill

Advantages: See Text

...of international man of mystery Austin Powers (Mike Myers), a 1960s super-suave detective. Big hair, terrible teeth and every woman's dream, he is hero-worshipped. His arch enemy is Dr Evil (emm... Mike Myers!), a balding evil mastermind with his faithful cat Mr. Bigglesworth by his side. As Austin chases him through a nightclub, Dr Evil has himself cryogenically frozen and sent into space via a huge statue of Big Boy. Cut to the 90's, where Big ...
...soon find out that Austin has also been frozen just in case such a situation arose, and is now being thawed out. He is joined by Vanessa Kensington (Liz Hurley... oh yes) on his quest to stop Dr. Evil who has hijacked two nuclear warheads and is threatening to destroy the world. Austin soon realizes that the 90's is very different from the love-and-peace world of the 60's, and he must learn a lot of lessons about how to adjust to real relationships, ... Read review

Throw Me A Figgin Bone Here
Review of Austin Powers - International Man Of Mystery DVD by Sid76

Advantages: Funny With Some Great Gags
Disadvantages: Maybe A little To Much Of Myers

Austin Powers is a groovy secret agent of the 1960s, who dons velvet threads, horn-rimmed glasses and bad teeth. Imagine a flower-child from the sixties, bopping around London in a ludicrous coloured sports car, and dancing in clubs to the groovy sounds of 60's pop, while on constant alert for his arch-nemesis, Dr. Evil. Austin Powers, is another bit of silliness or genius from the often brilliant comic mind of Mike Myers, who previously gave us ...
...In Austin Powers, the '60s secret agent and his nemesis both undergo cryogenic freezing, only to be defrosted in 1997. Pity poor Austin, going from an age of wild, unprotected free sex, and promiscuity, to a time when such activity is simply deadly. But, at least fashion has improved and dentistry has made great strides. It's also not easy for Dr. Evil. For example, he demands $1 million from world leaders or he'll use lasers to burn a hole in the ... Read review

Groovy review baby
Review of Austin Powers - International Man Of Mystery DVD by rachelkanga

Advantages: Good, fun spoof
Disadvantages: Plot is a bit weak

...being a bit of an Austin Powers fan and do own all three of the movies on DvD. It is rare these days for a film that receives so much acclaim prior to release to actually live up to the hype surrounding it but I think Austin Powers actually does. Being a spoof of ever popular James Bond - the similarities to characters is uncanny and may turn some people off the film but the film is designed to be a comedy and some of the jokes are very near the ...

The Power of Laughter
Review of Austin Powers - International Man Of Mystery DVD by scruff

Advantages: Best comedy of the nineties and a cracking soundtrack
Disadvantages: Liz Hurley - enough said

...what do you get? AUSTIN POWERS INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY – of course!!! Austin Powers is a true gentlemen spy jut like James Bond but instead of Saville Row suits, he opts for the crushed velvet variety. Yes you’ve guessed it – gone is the suave sophistication of the upper class society, instead its more of a “Carneby Street” style with its bright colours, after all this is the swinging sixties. So its time to get down with the groovy cats,….man. ...
...return in the future where Austin Powers will be unable to stop his dastardly deeds. Austin Powers offers himself to be cryogenically frozen and to remain so until he I needed once again…. Time moves on and Dr Evil returns back to Earth in 1997 and holds the world to ransom for 1 Billion dollars. Failure to pay will result in a nuclear bomb being detonated in the Earth’s core. Austin Powers is woken from his frozen state and partnered with Miss ... Read review
