August Rush is a story of music and inspiration. Orphaned youngster Evan (Freddie Highmore - Finding Neverland) hears music in everything around him but it is only when he journeys out into the world to bring his sound to the people in the hope to find his true parents that his discovery of music really begins. Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell - TV's Felicity) an aspiring celloist and Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Myers - Vanity Fair) the lead singer of an english rock band find each other while breaking away from their bustling lifestyles. After a night of passion Lyla becomes pregnant but its down to her scheming father that she loses her baby. Twelve years later they are all still searching for one another but when Evan is discovered by street performer, Wizard (Robin Williams - Good Will Hunting) Evan soons learns of his gifts as an artist.
As a whole this film is quite slowly paced with some typical feel good moments. What lifts this above the average is the ever excellent Highmore, whom I have previously raved about. Currently appearing in Nickleodeons new film - 'The Spiderwick Chronicles' where he plays American twins, Highmore is clearly putting himself in a class of his own as he matures, already having set some high marks appearing along side Johnny Depp, twice!
The other major plus point to the film is a very excellent soundtrack featuring the very rustic tones of Jonathan Rhys Myers (Who knew he could sing) accompanied by some stunning and inspiring orchestral pieces.
The film as a whole is inspiring and lifts the spirit in a tender and sensative manner.
It is let down only it's sentimental predictability and a poor performance from Williams whose recent movies have failed to hit the right spot.
Look out for very talented youngsters - Jamia Simone Nash and Leon G. Thomas III.
A pleasant film with alot of feel good factor. See this if you enjoyed - 'Mr Hollands Opus' (1995) 'Music of the heart' (1999)
