Plato's undersea legend,Atlantis: The Lost Empire, deserves kudos for tackling the heady expectation surrounding modern action films and the artistic expressionism of Japanese anime, all the while maintaining a precarious sense of studio tradition and dedication to animation quality. Advantages: Action! Adventure! Explosions! Disadvantages: Too 'grown up' for young kids
...wonderful animation. The city of Atlantis is wonderfully realised and quite breathtakingly beautiful. I like everything about this movie - I honestly can’t fault it. People like Joss Whedon (TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Toy Story) have contributed to the script and it shows. The ideas are both fresh and familiar, but always intriguing and entertaining. Presumably, the movie’s failure can be blamed on mass mis-marketing. If ... ...that they would see some real anime-style action and adventure, then they may well have ended up with a minor hit instead of trying to have it all and coming away with nothing.
A case of Disney being a bit too greedy - surely not!
Anyway, ignore the anti-hype and go and see this movie. If clanmac and Crazy recommend it - it must be good! Rated ‘U’, 95 minutes. ...

Suddenly, out of the blue comes an old friend of his father who has the ability to let our hero realize his dream, together they put together a party of explorers, engineers and several strange characters to go and find the lost city.

Apart from that I found Atlantis to be a typically charming film, and will almost certainly watch it again and probably buy the video – that means I liked it!. ...

Advantages: Fun story, great animation and sound Disadvantages: More orientated towards a younger audience than say Dinosaurs which had a wider appeal
...for the basic version of Atlantis - The Lost Empire.
"Set your course for the adventure of a lifetime as Disney unlocks the mystery to the legendary Lost Empire of Atlantis in this thrilling, imaginative animated epic. Driven to find the sunken mythical kingdom, a young adventurer named Milo discovers an ancient journal with clues to its hidden location. Along with a skilled yet quirky group of explorers led by the confident commander Rourke, Milo ... ...Milo's mission switches from finding Atlantis to saving it".
I really enjoyed this film, and the story of Atlantis is timeless. It was an excellent blend of comedy and drama that is suitable for all ages. It is definately orientated towards the younger viewer which stops it having the wider appeal of such classics as Dinosaurs and Toystory, this never the less will be enjoyed by all.
Older viewers will spot flaws such as the Atlantians having the ...

Advantages: Exciting old school adventure, played straight and better for it. Disadvantages: Don't be put off if you hate Disney.
...at the same time.
Atlantis is not weighed down by any of these, it has no songs, no comic relief cute critter (The Mole bloke comes close, but not too close) , a good straight rousing adventure plot and some awe inspiring moments that make it rise to the surface and break through the water to gleam in the sunlight naked and beautiful.
Basic plot - Milo, the grandson of an explorer/scientist who was obsessed with finding Atlantis (Lost city, missing ... ...with. The opening scene shows Atlantis and a VERY BIG wave and is absolutely brilliant, it all quiets down while we get to know Milo, and then we see the VERY BIG submarine he gets to ride in and it all kicks off again. The words VERY BIG appear a lot when you try to describe the animation, its used to great effect to show deep panning shots of Atlantis, sea creatures that dwarf the already quite large submarine, and powerful forces like volcanos ...

Plot: Part INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, part 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE marries mythology, futuristic underwater vehicles, and turn-of-the-century adventure for an animated treat. Thanks in part to cowriter Joss Whedon (creator of the edgy BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER series), the film is filled with relaxed wit and more grown-up, pseudo-supernatural perils than some recent Disney films, without being inappropriate for kids. This non-musical extravaganza pits Good against Evil, and pairs a nerdy young scientist-turned-explorer, Milo Thatch (Michael J. Fox), with an independent-minded platinum blond bombshell of a princess, Kida (Cree Summer)--provided Kida's father, the distrusting king (Leonard Nimoy), approves. Milo, a museum curator relegated to menial jobs, is obsessed with the famed lost empire of Atlantis. His grandfather once told him about a mysterious Shepherd's Journal that could help him find the now-sunken kingdom and, with the help of eccentric millionaire Preston B. Whitmore (John Mahoney), Milo and several other funny, quirky crew members set out on a heart-pounding adventure. The crew includes Vinny, a demolitionist (Don Novello, better known as Father Guido Sarducci); Dr. Sweet, the gentle cook (Phil Morris, a.k.a. Kramer's lawyer on SEINFELD); and a paternal but brusque Captain Rourke (James Garner). The plot is intricate and suspenseful, and artist Mike Mignola (creator of the comic book series HELLBOY) offers up an intense but beautifully simple animated environment as stunning as Queen Amadala's planet in STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE. With monsters like the vicious Leviathan (a mechanical lobster that guards the gates to the city) adding thrills and chills, who could ask for more
