Plato's undersea legend, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, deserves kudos for tackling the heady expectation surrounding modern action films and the artistic expressionism of Japanese anime, all the while maintaining a precarious sense of studio tradition and dedication to animation quality. Opening with the obligatory pop song ("Where the Dream Takes You," a serviceable slice of modern R&B co-written with Diane Warren), James Newton Howard's rousing orchestral score at once recalls the traditions of previous Disney adventures such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. But Howard updates that tradition with alternating doses of tense, Williams-esque dynamics (particularly in the rousing "Leviathan"), and the sense of frequently playful wonder familiar from Dinosaur, his previous effort for the studio's animators. His evocative musical portraits of Atlantis often conjure the ghost of Bernard Herrmann at his most romantic and adventuresome, adding a sense of emotional gravity and a sophisticated air of exotic mystery unus

The story begins with Milo Thatch, a young linguistic expert who is given the opportunity to search for the lost city of Atlantis. With the help of an ancient journal and a crew of explorers they begin their search for Atlantis, which they do discover (naturally, or else there wouldn't be a film). Milo and the team find the city still inhabited by a lost civilisation that need help to keep their home alive, but a dark plot could mean the end of Atlantis if Milo doesn't put a stop to it...
I enjoyed the plot and storyline although I thought there could have been more time placed on certain storylines since there were a few plot holes and questions left, it also felt a little rushed around the end. There was some good character development though which helped push the story forwards, but the character Mole was just there for the humorous moments and didn't really have a chance to become well known to the watcher. Although I'm sure my younger relations would love watching him. He's probably there to bring light heartedness to the movie since Atlantis seems a little more mature than other older Disney movies. What with pyromaniacs and gun-wielders being some of the main characters, but, like in almost all Disney movie cartoons there's the predictable ending. In most Disney movies there has to be some romantic involvement between some of the main characters, which happens to Milo and Atlantis's Princess Kida. Normally I'm watching such scenes with boredom, waiting for the movie to return to a humour moment or adventure but I actually enjoyed watching Milo and Kida's interaction. Rather than the 'meet for the first time and instantly fall in love' scenes in some movies their relationship was developed realistically which I found more watchable.
The movie's artwork could have been improved mainly around the backgrounds but there are some good landscapes when the team reach the city of Atlantis. Atlantis The Lost Empire's character designs had a distinct influence of Japanese anime in the large eyes but the cartoon was still distinctly Disney in their appearance even if the artwork is a little angular.
Voice acting was good and helped to make the characters more believable and likable. The more enjoyable voice actors were Michael J Fox (Milo), Claudia Christian (Helga), Phil Morris (Sweet), Don Novello (Vinny) and Jacqueline Obradors (Audrey). Pretty much all of them. The movie's soundtrack was enjoyable to listen to, it was mainly orchestral and the music followed the movie's scenes and added to the atmosphere. There was this pop song which appeared with the credits which I didn't think was very good or followed the slightly dark mood Atlantis was going for.
Even with some plot holes left open and a predictable ending I loved watching Atlantis The Lost Empire, the characters were fun to watch and their relationships were realistic. Fans of the original Disney movies might not enjoy this musical-less cartoon with guns and mechanical creatures instead of magical wands and singing birds, but people who want something new with a touch of Disney style will find this fun to watch, especially if they want to entertain the kids.
Voice Actors: Milo - Michael J Fox. Kida - Cree Summer. Rourke - James Garner. Vinny - Don Novello. Sweet - Phil Morris. Helga - Claudia Christian. Audrey - Jacqueline Obradors. ...wonderful animation. The city of Atlantis is wonderfully realised and quite breathtakingly beautiful. I like everything about this movie - I honestly can’t fault it. People like Joss Whedon (TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Toy Story) have contributed to the script and it shows. The ideas are both fresh and familiar, but always intriguing and entertaining. Presumably, the movie’s failure can be blamed on mass mis-marketing. If ... ...that they would see some real anime-style action and adventure, then they may well have ended up with a minor hit instead of trying to have it all and coming away with nothing.
A case of Disney being a bit too greedy - surely not!
Anyway, ignore the anti-hype and go and see this movie. If clanmac and Crazy recommend it - it must be good! Rated ‘U’, 95 minutes. ...

"Set your course for the adventure of a lifetime as Disney unlocks the mystery to the legendary Lost Empire of Atlantis in this thrilling, imaginative animated epic. I really enjoyed this film, and the story of Atlantis is timeless. It was an excellent blend of comedy and drama that is suitable for all ages. It is definately orientated towards the younger viewer which stops it having the wider appeal of such classics as Dinosaurs and Toystory, this never the less will be enjoyed by all.
Older viewers will spot flaws such as the Atlantians having the ...

Atlantis is not weighed down by any of these, it has no songs, no comic relief cute critter (The Mole bloke comes close, but not too close) , a good straight rousing adventure plot and some awe inspiring moments that make it rise to the surface and break through the water to gleam in the sunlight naked and beautiful.

The opening scene shows Atlantis and a VERY BIG wave and is absolutely brilliant, it all quiets down while we get to know Milo, and then we see the VERY BIG submarine he gets to ride in and it all kicks off again. The words VERY BIG appear a lot when you try to describe the animation, its used to great effect to show deep panning shots of Atlantis, sea creatures that dwarf the already quite large submarine, and powerful forces like volcanos ...

Part INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, part 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE marries mythology, futuristic underwater vehicles, and turn-of-the-century adventure for an animated treat. Thanks in part to cowriter Joss Whedon (creator of the edgy BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER series), the film is filled with relaxed wit and more grown-up, pseudo-supernatural perils than some recent Disney films, without being inappropriate for kids. This non-musical extravaganza pits Good against Evil, and pairs a nerdy young scientist-turned-explorer, Milo Thatch (Michael J. Fox), with an independent-minded platinum blond bombshell of a princess, Kida (Cree Summer)--provided Kida's father, the distrusting king (Leonard Nimoy), approves. Milo, a museum curator relegated to menial jobs, is obsessed with the famed lost empire of Atlantis. His grandfather once told him about a mysterious Shepherd's Journal that could help him find the now-sunken kingdom and, with the help of eccentric millionaire Preston B. Whitmore (John Mahoney), Milo and several other funny, quirky crew members set out on a heart-pounding adventure. The crew includes Vinny, a demolitionist (Don Novello, better known as Father Guido Sarducci); Dr. Sweet, the gentle cook (Phil Morris, a.k.a. Kramer's lawyer on SEINFELD); and a paternal but brusque Captain Rourke (James Garner). The plot is intricate and suspenseful, and artist Mike Mignola (creator of the comic book series HELLBOY) offers up an intense but beautifully simple animated environment as stunning as Queen Amadala's planet in STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE. With monsters like the vicious Leviathan (a mechanical lobster that guards the gates to the city) adding thrills and chills, who could ask for more
