This film is truly thought-provoking. It really brings reality to life. For many of us, myself included, take things for granted, like our major senses; this film puts us in our place. However it does portray this theme in a subtle way. The subject of "blindless" is reversed- as in a blind man gains his sight and the difficulties of adapting to life with light are highlighted. The good side to this film shows that you can find love in whatever situation you may be in and that perseverence and determination are the keys to success. There's a tremendous sense of well-being in this film. I probably wouldn't watch this film again as it's fairly heavy. I personally prefer to sit back and relax but I'm sure for the right person this film is excellent.
Advantages: Too many to list Disadvantages: Changes in the words
...of Marjory Majors.
Tom Conti as Coatas is so funny; he plays a Greek god like man who many women would drool at firstsight.
Extras
I am very disappointed that there are no extras on this DVD but I suppose, with this film being released back in 1989 there was not all they could have put on.
The menu is play, scene selection and subtitles.
Price
I have done a search over the Internet and prices are from £5 to £10 for this DVD. I have no idea what this cost as my partner bought it for me. I had kept going on about this film so much that my partner got fed up with me and bought it. I only get to watch it on the condition that he is not around.
Overview
This is still one of my favourite films as every time I watch it brings back memories of my mum, sister and I sitting on the sofa on a Sunday afternoon...

...studios in the 1930's. It is a very poignant ending and I did require a tissue.
~Technical Details~
Made in 1990 at the same time as 'La Gloire de Mon Pere', this film was made posthumously (Pagnol died in 1974) and adapted from the novels Pagnol wrote during the 1950's of his childhood. I haven't read the books so can't comment on the accuracy of the adaptation.
As in the first film there is a beautiful classic French music soundtrack by Vladimir Cosma which is available seperately on CD.
The DVD by Second Sight films is budget style, no extras except for scene selection. The English subtitles are automatic and I could not remove them by menu or subtitle button on my DVD player. This would be frustrating for those who can speak French well and who wish to hear rather than read the film. Although my French is not very good as...
