Possibly one of the most well known characters in the history of anime, Astro Boy was originally the creation of Japan's prime comic-creator, Osamu Tezuka. First seen in comic books, the character went on to appear on television in a black-and-white series throughout the 1960s and '70s, all before starring in this 2004 colour series. Set in the year 2030, the show follows Astro Boy, a small young robot who is adopted and trained to save the universe after being deserted by his inventor. Dr. Elefun takes the robot in, teaching him how to use his powers for the good of humanity. With his giving personality, flying ability, and inhuman strength, who better to take on the bad forces of the world than this diminutive boy-machine?

Advantages: Gorefest Disadvantages: Not for the weak stomached
...Peter Jackson's debut as screenwriter and director is an hilarious and frequently disgusting B movie parody of a coastal town taken over by Lord Crumb and his army of alien invaders, who are planning to harvest humans for an intergalactic chain of fast-food restaurants. But Derek (Jackson) and his mates from AIDS (the Astro Investigation and Defense Service) are sent in by the government to destroy the enemy at all costs and ensure the survival of mankind. The effects are done on a budget but none the less stomach churning, check out exploding sheep, a chainsaw through the head of an alien and a mashed up seagull. This is a must see for all those who like a helping of humour with there violence and gore....

Advantages: Overwhelmingly funny Disadvantages: can turn your stomach
...This is the most hilarious low budget sci-fi I’ve seen since Dark Star, and anyone who is familiar with Peter Jackson films (other than the upcoming Lord of the Rings) will see the usual Jackson senseless gore fest. The movie is about aliens taking over a small New Zealand village and beginning their plot to take over the world using humans as food. In steps the Astro Intelligence and Defense Service (AIDS) to end it right now. Cheap effects and gun battles are obviously low budget, but it’s the totally over the top gore that makes the film. Any fans of really low budget sci-comedy will love this. Watch it with a really revolting pizza....
