one of the ultimate genre-defying moments in modern cinema. A lean, mean masterpiece bursting with furious energy and base terror, Assault on Precinct 13 mixes the moral codes of the classic western Rio Bravo with the kinetic camerawork of Night of the Living Dead to provide a breathtaking and ruthless ride through the dangerous streets of 1970s LA. When a vicious gang murder a young girl in cold blood, her vengeful father incites full blown conflict by shooting one of her killers, before fleeing to the soon-to-be-closed Precinct 13 - where only one officer, two secretaries and a handful of criminals remain. Faced by an enemy that is cold, brutal and terrifyingly merciless, Lt. Bishop (Austin Stoker) and the others are isolated as night falls, and the attack begins. With a minimal script that allows the action to flourish, and now cult score (composed by Carpenter himself), Assault on Precinct 13 still incites a level of fear in the viewer that's rarely matched, making the film a true classic.

1976 version…..
Director: John Carpenter. Producer: J.S. Kaplan Writer:John Carpenter Stars: Austin Stoker, Darwin Joston, Laurie Zimmer, Martin West and Tony Burton
Released in 1976 this movie was shot on a small budget but still managed to create a very thrilling hour and half of action and shocks.
**BRIEF PLOT**
In a run down part of Los Angeles, known as the Anderson ghetto, a gang of villains, known as Street thunder, are out for revenge after some of their 'colleagues' are killed by armed police officers. The gang warlords then go on the rampage in the small neighbourhood, killing innocent civilians at random.
Meanwhile, in a soon to be abandoned police station, named precinct 9, Division 13, there remains a few officers finalising the closure, the skeleton staff consist of Officer Chaney, (played by Henry Brandon), two secretaries, Leigh, (played by Laurie Zimmer) and Julie, (played by Nancy Loomis) and the new arrival Lieutenant Ethan Bishop, (played by Austin Stoker), who is assigned to close the station.
Unfortunately, as the warlords are seeking revenge in the ghetto, a man named Lawson, (played by Martin West) with his young daughter Kathy, (played by Kim Richards), are driving through and soon become victims of the gang killings.
Also, in the ghetto, a prison bus is driving through, with three prisoners, Napoleon Wilson, (played by Darwin Joston), Wells, (played by Tony Burton) and Caudell, (played by Peter Frankland), being taken to another facility, when one of them becomes ill, forcing the officer in charge of the bus, Starker, (played by Charles Cyphers) to ask the officers at the precinct for assistance.
The trouble soon starts at the station when Lawson barges through the doors, unable to tell anyone what was happening.
Within minutes the station is under fire, bullets and glass flying everywhere, the people inside the station unable to call for help…there only hope for survival is to fight their way out…but with limited ammunition and no hope of rescue there chances are slim….

I had heard about this movie many times before I actually sat and watched it, mostly people saying what a good movie it was, and how right they were…
The story is well written, (for its time) and the suspense is brilliantly played out..
The build up to the full scale action was thrillingly brilliant and well told, as the three scenarios, (the street thunder, Lawson and the prison bus), all merge into one and exploded inside the police station, with some devastating effects….
Once the build up, or the introduction of the characters, has happened the action and thrills really do take over as the Street Thunder gang completely over run the police station without making it obvious from the outside.
Although the movie does seem a little 'tacky' in parts, mainly due to its tiny budget and the then useless special effects, it does not spoil the enjoyment at all, in fact it seems to make this one more of a cult classic.
Would I recommend this….?
Yes I certainly would. It is a fine entertaining movie for its day and is well worth watching.

Director: Jean-Francois Richet. Producers: Pascal Caucheteux, Jeffrey Silver and Stephane Sperry Writer: John Carpenter (1976 version) James DeMonaco (2005 version) Stars: Ethan Hawke, Lawrence Fishburne, Gabriel Byrne, John Leguizamo, Maria Bello, Brain Dennehhy, Ja Rule and Drea De Matteo.
Released in 2005 this movie is a sort of updated version little of the 1976 cult classic of the same name.
**BRIEF PLOT**
Recently arrested crime lord Marion Bishop, (played by Laurence Fishburne) is being transported to prison, together with three other prisoners, but with the weather worsening and a snow storm approaching, the bus is diverted to Precinct 13, a rather old police station in Detroit which is due to be closed by the end of that day.
Sergeant Jake Roenick, (played by Ethan Hawke) is one of the handful of officers who are left behind at the station to clear up before closure…
When the precinct comes under fire from an armed gang outside it is not long before Jake uncovers who the attackers are and what they are after, unknowingly putting the entire precincts occupants in danger…..
As the bullets fly and the bodies fall Jake and the remaining survivors realise that they have to escape the building in order to survive…. But with professional snipers lurking outside the plan to escape is a little more difficult than they think….

**IN CONCLUSION**
A fine movie roughly based on the 1976 original, (but maybe not as good)
There is plenty of action and thrills to keep everyone entertained and the special effects do give this version more credit on the thrills…
The story line is more up to date, using more sophisticated equipment and 21st century reasoning for why the precinct is under siege…
In all this is worth watching but given the choice, and in my humble opinion, the original is still by far the more thrilling….
Advantages: good action packed film! Disadvantages: nothing really new in it.
Assault on Precinct 13 is a polished remake of the 70’s classic with Ethan Hawke as a good cop whose quiet new year’s eve at his run-down Detroit precinct turns crazy when a crime lord (Fishburne), put in the cells, is the target of an attack from masked gun-men. Criminals and Police unite in an attempt to fight against the ambush. The Characters and film makers

Advantages: Classic film, soundtrack, direction, story Disadvantages: More people haven't seen it, is being re-made
Assault on Precinct 13 was a film recommended to me by my dad. He has seen more films than anyone else I know and he said this was one of the best he has seen, so I decided it would be worthwhile watching it and seeing what I thought. This film was made in 1976 by John Carpenter. He was the man also responsible for the Thing, Halloween and Big Trouble in Little China. This film was one I thoroughly enjoyed and I will tell you later why.
The plot ... ...a knife-edge as much as Assault on Precinct 13. I have to say this is one of those films that has set a precedent that has yet to be filled. Others have come close, Die Hard was quite similar in a way and I suppose other thrillers like Speed were as adrenaline pumping. Overall, this is one of those films I could watch time and time again. I would say it is up there in my favourite ten or fifteen films and I would highly recommend this to anyone. ...

...one of Tarrantino's favourite film, Assault on Precint 13 exposes the majority of recent action/adventure films for the pretenders that they are. Where Die Hard, Con Air et al are fine tuned to provide a cathartic rush in the manner of a ride at Alton Towers, this film is the adrenaline rush of a grade VI white-water raft trip - you're not strapped in, you cling on. ...

Advantages: Tension throughout, raw low budget movie, good character definition, cool soundtrack Disadvantages: Low budget may put people off that like well crafted Hollywood productions, some actings a bit hammy
The best thing about "Assault on Precinct 13" (1976) is that it can be enjoyed on many levels by different people. It stands as a tense, gun-toting, hard-hitting thriller. However, there's a million movies like that so, what makes Precinct 13 different? What makes it worth watching again and again?
The sense of tension is evident throughout the film. Carpenter (who made this as his second film on a shoestring budget of $100,000 and wrote, directed ... ...with a girl and her father driving to visit Grandma. They get lost and as he phones for direcions, his daughter goes for an ice-cream. The fact that everythings been fine-and-dandy up until now makes this an obvious mistake. Some members of a gang callously gun down the ice-cream seller and little girl. The distraught father gives chase and exacts a deserved reply by killing one of the hoods. This sets the scene for our movie. The gang (who appear ...

This movie stuck me a bit of a saturday night no-brainer when I saw it in the shop and so I snatched it up and settled in for a night of unrealistic violence and bravado.
I have never seen the original 'Assault on Precinct 13' but I know enough about it to recognise that the premise of this film follows it quite closely. On a snowy New Years Eve a police precint (13) is being closed down and the staff moved to a newer more modern facility. Sergeant Roenick (Ethan Hawk) is in charge for the night and he is a former undercover agent who is recovering from a leg wound he took on a botched mission where he lost his team. Jasper (Brian Dennehy) is a old cop from the old skool and ironically this is to be his last day before retirement (cliche #1). Completing the staff is Iris (Drea de Matteo) the slutty secretary who ...

Advantages: A solid film with capable performances and a serviceable script Disadvantages: It won't linger long in your memory
All is quiet on New Year?s Eve in a soon-to-be-decommissioned police station. That is until a busload of convicts is told to overnight there until a snowstorm passes. Among them is Marion Bishop, a big-time crime-lord with powerful friends. Soon after arriving masked men break in and try to free him. They are repelled, but it?s only the beginning of a night-long siege where the police officers and prisoners will have to join forces if they are to stand any chance of survival.
Well here we are on the remake merry-go-round once more ladies and gentleman. This time the subject of the remake is John Carpenter?s low-budget 1976 revenge thriller ?Assault on Precinct13?, in which the father of a murdered girl takes matters into his own hands and kills one of her attackers before holing up in an almost closed police precinct. Or at least ...
Advantages: Great Action Scenes, Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishbourne Disadvantages: Gabriel Byrne Cookie-Cutter Bad Guy
't think the normally brilliant Gabriel Byrne was very convincing as the bad guy. It really did just seem like he was just there for the pay check, but I guess he has to pay the bills. Generally I don't think Byrne's talents are properly utilized in many films and this is a prime example. One of the reasons could be the focus inside Precinct13 and the conflicts between the defenders rather than the attacks and Byrne. What Byrne needs is another role that he can really get his teeth into like The Usual Suspects.
I though Assault on Preceinct 13 was quite a good action film and would highly reccomend it to anyone interested, especially fans of Hawke and Fishbourn ...
The story is set on a snowy New Year's Eve in a police station somewhere in Detroit. The team were about to leave the precinct to retire it (for it was to be it's final day of operation) and celebrate the New Year. A bunch of criminals were being transported on a bus to another prison, but due to the bad weather, this bus just had to stop over at this precinct.
After a couple of moments, they are under attack. They have no idea who these men are.
One of the prisoners is Marion Bishop (Fishburne) - who murdered a cop. The precinct13 team thought that it was Bishop's men trying to redeem him. But they eventually find out that they were rogue cops trying to kill him.
The prisoners were only to be kept for the night. And in order to survive, they would have to defend themselves. And this meant that the prisoners had to help protect ...

DVD Description
In 1976, John Carpenter paid homage to Howard Hawks' superlative western RIO BRAVO with his second full-length feature film, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. Now it's Carpenter's turn to experience some cinematic adulation, with this remake of the film from director Jean-François Richet. Set in Detroit, Richet's film focuses on police Sergeant Jake Roenick, whose failed career as an undercover cop has lead to a New Years Eve stint in charge of the dilapidated Precinct 13. As a snowstorm rattles the windows and doors of the rundown station, Roenick exchanges some festive banter with police psychologist Alex Sabian (Maria Bello); curvaceous secretary Iris Ferry (Drea de Matteo); and retiring veteran Jasper O'Shea (Brian Dennehy). But their merriment is interrupted when a diverted prison bus escapes the ravages of the storm, seeking a temporary haven for its peccant passengers in Precinct 13. Criminal mastermind Marion Bishop (Laurence Fisburne) is on board, along with a junkie, Beck (John Leguizamo), and two young felons, Smiley (Ja Rule) and Anna (Aisha Hinds). Hot on their tail comes police detective Marcus Duvall (Gabriel Byrne), a crooked cop who wants Bishop dead before he testifies against Duvall in court. Bringing a formidable army of fellow corrupt officers with him, Duvall puts the police station under siege in order to snag his man before it's too late. But he doesn't bank on the impressive wiles of Roenick and his rag-tag mixture of cops and criminals, who unite in an attempt to defend themselves from an execrable ending at the hands of Duvall and his men. A highly entertaining action romp ensues, with director Richet delivering a fast-paced thriller laced with violence and surprising plot twists, ensuring viewers are kept on their toes right up until the film's blood-soaked finale.
