1956 was the year that producer ( and then husband of Elizabeth Taylor ) launched Jules Vernes Around The World In Eighty Days into cinemas to great acclaim
The basic story here is a an English Gentlemen Philius Fogg played with his custom charm by David Niven is bet at his club that he cannot travel around the world in 80 days. What follows is fantastic journey across the world by various means of transport avaiable at the turn of the last century.
Niven is supported by Meixcan comedian Cantinflas as his manservant, Shirley MacLaine as an Indian Princess and Robert newton hamming it as usual as a Police Inspector convinced that Fogg as robbed the Bank Of England
Add to that a list of hundreds of cameos including Noel Coward, Frank Sinatra,John Geilgud,Trevor Howard,Marlene Dietrich to name but a few
The film at the time was hugely popular and also won 5 oscars for Best Picture,Best Adapted Screenplay,Best Musical Score ,and of course best Best Cinematography ( the other escapes me at presnt )
