A low earth orbit space station is in the middle of a repair mission with the space shuttle when an unforeseen meteor shower obliterates them both. This sudden event sends...
more...fireballs hurtling to Earth and scientists scurrying to telescopes. An amateur astronomer is the first to spy a gigantic fireball headed towards the planet and notifies NASA. Turner (Thornton) informs the president of the asteroid and describes it as being the size of Texas, a planet-killer. With eighteen days to impact, NASA frantically tries to find a solution but ends up turning to an outside contractor. Harry Stamper (Willis) and his team of ragamuffin roughneck oilmen are called upon to save the planet as only they can.

Released in 1998, this action/ adventure movie seemed to be your standard sci-fi/ save the world from complete disaster… and pretty standard it is.

**BRIEF PLOT**

When the city of New York is struck by a series of Meteors which destroy many landmarks, the big wigs at NASA soon realise that there is a much larger threat to
planet earth.

As an asteroid the size of Texas heads for Earth NASA must figure a way to stop the collision, averting total destruction of the world.

The only plan that the think tank of NASA can come up with is to try and land a small team of 'deep-core drillers' onto the moving Asteroid to plant a nuclear device deep into the mass of rock with the hope of obliterating it before it enters the Earths atmosphere.

The plan doesn't quite go to plan in space as things go from bad to worse as the make shift crew fail to have luck on their side.

**IN CONCLUSION**

This is your basic format for a 'save the planet' type movie.
The special effect are quite pleasing and the acting makes the movie more than it actually is.

The slow start does seem to go on for a while and the audience has to wait before some real action actually happens.
The writers spend some time introducing the 'soon to be heroes' to the viewers whilst giving a run down of what is the threat to the planet.

When the action does begin it is almost worth the wait as a quick trip into space turns out to be a little more complicated than first thought.

This really is your run of the mill action movie but is still worth watching, if just for the Bruce Willis type humour.

It's not a film to rush out and buy to add to your collection but when it does come on the television it is probably worth sitting through.

I've seen it the once and I'm not in a rush to see it again really.
