The Plot. ============ Earth is about to be hit by a huge meteor, which will cause total devastation. Earth wants to fight back, and N.A.S.A. has come up with a plan. Send two shuttles up to the meteor and drill a big hole in the meteor. Fill the hole with a nuclear bomb and blow the meteor in half, causing the two halves to deflect different directions and totally miss earth. Simple really or is it.
The Storyline =============== N.A.S.A.'s executive director, Dan Trueman (Billy Bob Thornton), realises that there is 18 days left before it will be destroyed by a huge meteor heading straight for it in outer space he has to come up with a plan fast. He needs the help of Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis), an Oil Rig drilling expert and his half-baked crew of rough and ready men. N.A.S.A are going to send up two space shuttles, one containing Harry and half of his crew, and the second will have A.J. (Ben Affleck) and the other half of Harry's crew on them. Each shuttle will also have a nuclear bomb and drilling equipment all to be taken up to the meteor surface. Grace (Liv Tyler), Harry's daughter and A.J.'s girlfriend is going to have to stay behind and watch
the mission fro earth. The idea being that between all of them on the two shuttles they have to drill a hole 800 feet deep in a certain time, place in a nuclear bomb, leave and blow the meteor in half. This will cause the two halves to be forced in a different rotation patterns and totally miss the earth. Sounds simple really, until you take a look Harry's crew and what they are up against. Not everything goes to plan during the flight to the meteor and only one shuttle actually gets to land close to the correct position on the meteor surface. This means the task ahead will now be harder and things just keep getting worse when they discover the meteor is made of an Iron style mineral, which will make drilling harder. Do Harry and his crew get the job done and save the world, do they all survive and do they have an earth to go home to, you will have to watch to find out.
The Acting / My Opinion ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bruce Willis gives us a fantastic performance as Harry Stamper in Armageddon. Yet again we get to see him portray the rough and ready, macho hero which he always seems to do so well in his roles in `Die Hard 1, 2 &3`. Maybe those rugged looks make it so easy for him to pull such excellent performances and yet make them so believable. Ben Affleck also gives us an excellent and truly believable performance in this movie. He has managed to give a certain unmistakable charm and wit to his character A.J. in the film although his burst of a tune for `Grace (Liv Tyler)` in my opinion has done absolutely nothing for his singing career, just as well really there is already enough stars taking that broad already. Liv Tyler gives us an expectable performance in this film, however it makes you wonder if she did only get the part as Daddy (Steve Tyler / Aerosmith) was doing some of the soundtrack, so this worked in her favour. In my opinion she is not the best at acting in this movie, still the men seem to like her (Surprise, Surprise). Michael Clarke Duncan was actually a bodyguard who was continually trying to get small acting roles when he hit the big time with this performance in Armageddon, it sent his career flying as it landed him the role in the `Green Mile` which was an outstanding performance. We also get to see some extremely good acting from Will Patton, Steve Buscemi and of course Billy Bob Thornton who all gave us an outstanding performances in there individual characters roles in the film. All in all I feel that all of the characters have given us an extremely entertaining film and they all manage to compliment each other.
Summary ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here we have yet another `End of the World` scenario film with, yes you guessed a bunch of wannabee heroes sent to try and save us. It is nice to see that they are up against the odds more in this film as it is portrayed for them to have things working continually against them. I just wish that they would stop with the I am the main actor and therefore the Hero in this film rubbish that always gets to us. Wouldn't it be nice if just for once, the odds on favourite turned chicken making Mr. Average the hero?
Director. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here we see a fantastic film excellently directed by Michael Bay who has brought us great films like `Bad Boys`, `Bad Boys II`, `The Island` and `The Rock`. He has done a fantastic job with the directing of this film, managing to make it extremely enjoyable and believable at the same time. It is understandable to see why the Director Guild has honoured him when you watch some of the films like this one that he has directed.
My Favourite Scene ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My favourite scene has to be where A.J. is in the Russian space station left in charge of monitoring the pressure gauge. He has been told that if it gets to a certain level he must pull the lever, which he does of course however, he actually manages to snap of the lever and just about gets out alive.
