Why is it that all films are planned out for a happy ending?? Why do the good guys always win in the end, despite endless problems they seem to encounter throughout, they always come out on top. Armageddon, despite a small hitch at the very end, displays this very well.
The Plot is simple. After a meteor shower hits New York, NASA find out that they have a huge meteor ‘The size of Texas’ heading straight for Earth. When they find out they have only 18 days before impact, it becomes a frantic race against time to save mankind.
After a load of pathetic ideas, the idea of blowing the meteor up from the inside is suggested. With a sever lack of good options, this is the only plan which is used in the end. Now all that is needed is the worlds best ‘Deep Core Driller’. Harry Stamper (played by a superb Bruce Willis) is selected for the job and agrees to do it as long he takes his workmates along with him (played also by a great cast including Billy Bob Thornton and Steve Buscemi). Harry’s Daughter, Grace (Liv Tyler) is less enthusiastic about it though as she will have to watch as her dad and fiancé AJ (Ben Affleck) go risk their lives to save the world. ‘The fate of the entire planet rests in those 14 brave soles’ states the President of the USA before lift off.
The acting is superb. With a rarity of many well known, quality actors in the cast, the expectation was high and there is no disappointment. Bruce Willis plays the owner of a large oil company and, as with most of his previous films (with the exception of the awesome ‘Sixth Sense) plays in a very all-action hero role. However, we actually see a new side to Bruce Willis that has not been seen before in his other films (well, not ones I’ve seen anyhow). He sheds a tear for Grace in a very important part of the film (don’t wanna give it away for people who haven’t seen it). Inside he’s just a really big softy in the end, awww.
Liv Tyler plays the role of Stamper’s daughter, Grace. From the start, she comes across as a mentally strong woman with power over his father but towards the end, turns emotionally weak when witnessing the world rescue. It is a fairly hard role to play, as two characters really and Tyler plays it very well considering.
Stamper’s crew consists of a fine cast of actors. Billy Bob Thornton plays his best friend ‘Chick’, a keen gambler. Steve Buscemi is Rockhound, a genius out to have fun, make money and attract lots of women. Ben Affleck plays misfit ‘AJ’, a rookie still learning the trade. His ongoing feud with Willis is made all the worse when it is discovered that he has been having a relationship with Grace. He is a good bloke at heart but comes across as a show off really, which doesn’t impress Willis at all. Michael Clarke Duncan (The Green Mile) plays the over powering ‘Bear’ who, like Willis presents himself as a tough guy but is really a very emotional person at heart.
With such a great cast, you would expect the film to be a big hit, but the special effects turn this film into a masterpiece. Awesome effects shown on the meteor give a good idea of what it would actually be like a rock of that sort.
Overall, this film is a true classic. The cast is awesome and combined with the special effects, make this film awesome overall. It is weird really to know that when a meteor last hit this planet, everything was wiped out (portrayed on the intro) and it could happen again at any time. Makes you wonder a bit. THIS FILM RULES AND IS A MUST BUY.
