~I settled down one night to watch this film on video.I knew basically what the plot was about, and i'd heard that it was a very long film, now that can sometimes be the downfall of a movie that's not that good, but after two hours i still didn't want this film to end.
~The plot is this, the shuttle Atlanta, while doing routine work in space, is blown up by a meteor shower. Then soon after New York is bombarded by the meteor's(brilliant special effects), but the worst is yet to come.A civilian using a very powerful telescope see's an explosion in space, and when he tell's NASA they lock onto his co-ordinates, and they discover to their horror(and everyone else's), an asteroid the size of texas heading straight for earth(wouldn't be much of a film if it wasn't would it), and if it hits earth the whole planet will be destroyed. (great performance by Billy Bob Thornton as Dan Trueman the man in charge at NASA)
~So, they get their heads together, and decide to blow it up, but being a big arse asteroid they have to drill into it, and blow it up from the inside out, because shooting missiles at it would have no effect. For this they need the best deep core driller there is.Enter Harry Stamper(Bruce Willis), and his band of merry men, consisting of A.J(Ben Affleck)headstrong, out to prove a point, and madly in love with Harry's daughter Grace(Liv Tyler). Then there's Chick(Will Patton) one of Harry's oldest friends who on the surface appears to have no family, but does have a son that doesn't even know he's got a father. Also Oscar(Owen Wilson)who is a bit dull, and doesn't always think before he acts, also he's a mad Jethro Tull fan. Then there's Bear(Michael Clarke Duncan-he played John Coffey in The Green Mile),and finally Rockhound(Steve Buscemi)who was my favourite of them all, he lives life to the full, and is completely crazy, but it turns out he's also a genius.
~So they all get trained up to learn, how to know what to do in space. In the mean time a smaller asteroid suddenly hits eastern asia, completely destroying it with even better special effects. So, they go into space armed with a missile in two ships, after a while in space they have to dock with the mia space station to re-fuel, but while doing so a fault occurs, and they end up taking the russian cosmonaught Andropov(Peter Stomare)with them.
~As for the rest of the film it's filled with the usual ups and downs.Nothing goes according to plan, they lose one of the ships, and they are all presumed dead. Then the other ship lands on the wrong part of the asteroid which is made of granite, and extremely difficult to drill through.Best of all Rockhound starts to really lose it, which is some of the funniest scenes in the film, and ultimately the missiles remote detonater gets damaged in a rock shower, and someone has to stay behind to detonate the missile.I won't tell you who, but from that point in the film i began crying and that was the end of me.
I felt the ending was fabulous, i won't go into detail about it because that will spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it, but i will say it was very emotional, and i feel the most frightening thing about this film is that it could happen at any time for real.
To top it all off you have a brilliant soundtrack by Aerosmith(Liv's daddy)which makes this one of the best films i've ever seen.I've bought a copy, and have seen it countless times.Go see it for yourself.
