We all know what kids say on a long journey - every five minutes. And so the title of the film gives you a hint about the content.
Personally, I was a big fan of Ice Cube in the film 'Friday' and the subsequent sequels. His music is also relatively good and the idea of him in a film like this appealed to me. It would be interesting to see how a swearing hard man rapper would fare in a film aimed at a younger audience. And so I plumped for it at the shops at a credible £6.99. So was my money worth the expense?
THE PLOT:
The plot basically sees Ice Cube fall in love with a woman who has kids. Easy start eh? Well, not quite. You see, the mother has to go away on a long distance trip and cannot take her kids. So Ice Cube volunteers himself to take them along by road - a nice loooooong journey.
As soon as the kids decide they don't like him, you know its about to become an even longer journey, and there are sure to be fun and frolics. The big question is, will he get them there safe, will they ever like him in the end and will they manage to give us some laughs along the way? You bet ya!
THE ACTING:
Some say films are made or broken by the acting. Personally I am more than aware that good acting won't make a crap script work, and bad acting can ruin the best of scripts. You need it all to come together to make a good film.
Thankfully, Ice Cube manages to fit the role of a wannabe dad that hasn't quite got the right image with his dropout gangster background. Indeed, he actually plays it rather badly - which adds to the fun of the film. You see, its hard to really call his performance as he really didn't seem to be comfortable in his role or what he was doing. But as a rapper who has a good car etc. and has never been around kids, he really shouldn't be comfortable. Is this good acting or is it bad acting made to look good? You decide. Either way, it really makes for a good film.
The children are also performed well. The daughter is mischeivous and yet sensitive and the son is closer to Ice Cube than he dares to let on. Despite this, he continues to work with his sister to make things difficult to handle for our star. Both roles are played well and the acting doesn't drop to hammy at either stage. Both are teenagers so the actors are probably young adults, but it works well and they keep the punchlines going.
Supporting actors also slip in and out of the film with ease. You wouldn't really notice them for anything other than the storyline, which is what you want part timers to do I suppose.
THE COMEDY:
OK, this is billed as a family comedy so I guess the comedy moments would be a good topic to mention. As with most films, this is not exactly a laugh a minute, with a lot of the jokes being built up during the course of the film. However, when they are delivered, they will at least raise a wry smile from the viewer.
The main form of comedy here is situational though. With a hard man rapper, a quality car and some kids, you inevitably have a volatile combination. The best comedy moments in the film revolve around this basic combination. Without spoiling the film it is difficult but one example would be at a petrol station when paying for fuel, the kids lock him out of the car - his $20000 car with clean seats. Somehow they find chocolate....
So you see, the film is more about situational comedy, which does run throughout the film and keeps your attention. Although you won't be crying the tears of laughter, you will certainly stifle a giggle in places.
As a film, I guess this is what you expect - if you want a laugh a minute, go buy a stand up comedians DVD show!
THE SPECIAL EFFECTS:
This film has little in the way of special effects, preferring to ensure that the film quality throughout is consistent and clever. So we see a slick production with plenty to keep your eyes on throughout.
There is one explosion scene though. Given the role of the film and its target audience, this is tamed down somewhat, which is fitting really. You do get to see realistic fire and flame though, and I'm not telling you whose/what car gets blown up. Needless to say, they meet many people on their 350 mile round trek, and the 24 hour deadline is a hard one to meet!
THE MUSIC:
With Ice Cube in the starring line-up, you can be sure that there will be Hip-hop throughout the film. For fans, there is enough here to keep you bobbing your head during certain scenes. For those who are not into this genre, the music isnt too loud over the film, making it less in your face than on some productions. It's more a subtle hint of hip-hop in the background to kept he mood of the film. Swearing has been removed in the main as well - don't want to offend anyone now do we?
THE PRICE:
This DVD is sadly not one you will find cheap. It wasnt very popular with paying customers when it first came out, which means you would be lucky to find it in second hand shops. So we are left with the as new price... wait for it.... yep, £16.99. Ouch.
This is Tesco.com and they are not joking! The films lack of popularity has also led to a lack of promotional activity or pricing competition, so even HMV in the town had this at £15.99.
At this price you have to really wonder if it's worth it!
EXTRAS:
Director's Commentary: This was actually the same as any other directors commentary and left me wondering why they bother to put them on any more. I guess it takes up space and looks good on the box.
Blooper Reel: Slightly better as the actors do have a good sense of humour. When they know the cameras wont get the scene, all sorts of comedic hell breaks loose. I would recommend this as a good watch on its own, probably funnier than the film itself.
Featurettes: These generally equal boredom and a good reason to curl up on the sofa and sleep. No exception here I am afraid - nothing of note.
Storyboard Comparisons: Not my bag I am afraid, but interesting for anyone who wants to direct or produce films in the future. Wannabe writers might also find it a useful insight.
2 DVD-ROM Games: These were well anticipated once I realised they were there. The kids especially love this sort of thing. Sadly, I was a little disappointed and the kids were soon back outside playing. A good five mins of fun - literally.
Deleted Scene: Now I often struggle to figure out the difference with deleted scenes and what went into the film. Maybe I am not observant enough! Still, after viewing the film and then watching this again, I can say I placed it!!!!! Not sure it made any difference that it was deleted though, didnt make us miss or add anything really. It was probably deleted for that very reason. Hmmmm.
SUMMARY:
A good film in its own way, although by no means exceptional. It would give you a giggle here and there and thats the main intention. Sadly, at its current price tag (and it has already been out a while!), I wouldn't advise you to part with your cash. If you find it for a fiver in the future, you might want to give it a whirl, but otherwise I would spend your money on something better. If you want comedy, I would rather point you in the direction of 'what women want' starring Mel Gibson. At £5, even if its not your bag, it won't leave you feeling skint and cheated!
Advantages: comedy and a fine story Disadvantages: none
...truck driver and the misunderstanding are simply brilliant… giving the movie so much comical leverage.
Would I recommend this…?
Yes I certainly would.
It is a fine comedy with a good story line that plods along at a good speed to entertain everyone.
The slapstick comedy effect really does bring many laughs and the incidents that the characters find themselves in are simply brilliant, and quite realistically terrifying.
I would recommend getting ...

...There Yet?', Nick and Suzanne are now married, and they, along with her two children, are living in Nick's cramped bachelor pad. When Suzanne tells Nick that she is pregnant, it becomes obvious that they will need a larger home.

Unfortunately, the house is not in great condition, and small DIY tasks turn into major home improvements. The ... ...Money Pit', and the laughs are far and few in between for the more mature viewer. Although all the actors gave a good performance in this movie, one in particular stands out: John C. McGinley. Many of you will be familiar with his antics on 'Scrubs' as nutty Dr. Perry Cox, and his hilarious performance as a highway patrolman in 'Wild Hogs', but he has outdone himself in 'Are We Done Yet?', and gives a brilliant performance. Without McGinley, 'Are ...

Advantages: Generally funny Disadvantages: Too cringeworthy
...with two little monsters who are trying to make life hellish for him to put him off dating their mother results in a pretty big nightmare for the poor guy! My thoughts: If you're not a big fan of kids, this might put you off even further! Those kids are scary! Some of their actions reminded me of real-life incidents, but some of them are also quite far-fetched and realistically would have had them killed, especially the parts involving cars and trucks. ... ...Besides the humour, there are also those heart-warming moments when the kids are not causing trouble, but rather, are needing help, and Nick, showing a softer side, is willing to help them despite trying to convince himself that he doesn't like kids.
The film isn't particulary clever and focuses on cringeworthy stunts and gags more than anything else. But it does work if you're looking for that kind of thing rather than anything deep and meaningful. ...

Ice cube stars in this overly sugary sweet romcom come road trip.
Nick (Ice Cube) falls for shop girl and mother Suzanne (Nia Long) Unfortunately her ties aren't as lovable as they could be... they're out to make sure no man replaces their daddy... only to find he's already replaced them.
After Suzannes car ends up in shop it falls to Nick to get her 2 children to her but when things go awry at the airport and then at the train station there becomes ... ...monster of a car.
This is all very predictable stuff with home alone style humour and a fluffy moral with a sugary sweet ending... the kids aren't likable... neither is Ice Cube who seems to let himself down with his acting skills. My dog could have come up with the script! All be it a pretty duff film it is light hearted and entertaining enough to get sidetracked with for a couple of hours when you have nothing else to do and the kids will like ...

If you are looking for a slightly meaningful family movie you wont find it here. In total it seemed as though there was the similar storyline and just didn't have enough substance even though I was in a light hearted state of mind. Advantages: A half-decent soundtrack Disadvantages: A hackneyed script and dodgy performances all-round
should want to slip into the family entertainment business, but taking his lead from Eddie Murphy that?s what he?s done. He?s not bad in ?AreWeThereYet?? he?s just not very good. Mainly it?s down to the dearth of decent material; I mean how can you invest emotionally in fighting a deer or being sprayed with vomit? So he hits his marks and says his lines but doesn?t sparkle. He?s at his most convincing as a bling lothario when flirting with Nia Long, but as that?s only five minutes of the movie the other eighty-five minutes are rather flat. The main problem is one of chemistry with the kids; in that there is none either positive or negative. He doesn?t seem bothered about them one way or the other and all the mugging and hugging in the world can?t cover it up.
Nia Long may be familiar to fans of ?The Fresh Prince of Bel Air? having played ...
Advantages: Will appeal to most people under the age of about 12 or 13 Disadvantages: If you were hoping to watch an Ice Cube film you'll be let down, he's nowhere in sight
A family film starring Ice Cube? You must be joking. Well apparently not. The ex-NWA member who has blessed us with lyrics such as 'You can do it put you ass into it' seems to have made a complete turnaround for his new feel-good movie. Anyone going into this movie with ideas of any of the films in the Friday trilogy or even barbershop will be bitterly dissappointed as Ice Cube becomes more family man than gangster rapper. If he had been able to make this role his own it may not have been so bad but the acting performance of Mr Cube is ...how shall i put it....terrible.
And it's not only Ice Cube who let's us down. Apart from the performances of the two child acters (who we always let off for bad acting anyway) the film does not have any bright sparks in the acting department.
When it comes to content the movie doesn't really get ...
Advantages: every episode from series Disadvantages: no extra features
season we see Carrie start up a relationship with Big for the second time, and then yet again see it come crashing down around her. At the end of the season Big once again makes an appearance, this time to tell Carrie that he has become engaged to his new girlfriend, Natasha. This season sees the girls go through some tough things, and we see the characters grow and develop. Maybe not quite so racy as season one, and perhaps not having the humour of season three, this is an important season nonetheless as we learn a lot about the characters. Thereare only 12 episodes in season one, so in the 18 in season two weare still learning about the 4 girls. We really see how different they are from each other, yetwe still see them look out for each other and come together regardless of their differences.

Ice Cube stars in this highly entertaining family comedy as Nick Persons, a thirtysomething player with a new Lincoln Navigator, who checks out every fine lady that passes by the window of the sports collectibles store where he works with pal Marty (Jay Mohr). Decked out in all the latest bling, Nick confidently approaches his latest attraction, Suzanne, only to learn that she is a recent divorcee with two kids. Little does he know, Suzanne's children are no ordinary kids. Lindsey and Kevin (Aleisha Allen and Philip Bolden) go to extremes to keep their mother single. Putting his dislike for children on the back burner, Nick decides to pursue Suzanne anyway. He soon realises though, that the only way to a single mother's heart is through her children. So when Suzanne needs a babysitter to transport her kids from Portland to Vancouver, Nick jumps at the chance. Getting more than he bargained for, Nick must survive 24 hours with two kids bent on destroying him, not to mention missed flights, missed trains, run-ins with wildlife and crazed truckers, and severe car trouble. Nick challenges himself to survive the journey better than his SUV, and learns that while trying to prove himself to Suzanne, he also impresses himself. Demonstrating his softer side, rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube (FRIDAY, BARBERSHOP) shows a flair for slapstick humour in this pleasing family picture. While humorous moments abound, ARE WE THERE YET
