This is the story of the Apollo 11 mission and the 'space hardware' that made it all possible. Armstrong, commander; Michael Collins, Command Module pilot; and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., Lunar Module pilot.76 hours after launch, the spacecraft was inserted into lunar orbit. Armstrong and Aldrin entered the Lunar Module preparing for descent to the lunar surface. Twenty four hours later the two spacecraft were undocked and the Command and Service Modules separated from the Lunar Module. On the 20th July 1969, after four days in Space, the now legendary astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the surface of the moon, uttering the unforgettable and now famous statement, 'One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind'. This momentous occasion of Neil Armstrong, shortly followed by Buzz Aldrin, setting foot on the 'Sea of Tranquility' from the lunar module 'Eagle', was broadcast live to a staggering 600 million people around the world. This film is based on the true story of Apollo 11 and her journey to the moon in July 1969. It goes from the beginning of the mission to landing on the moon itself. It also studies the men on the flight, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins and gives us an insight into their personalities. The action in the film is limited and is what you would expect from a story about Apollo 11, the film didn't do too well when it was released but despite this it is actually a good film and is very accurate in its historical detail. I really enjoyed this film and if you are interested in Space travel or the history of the moon landings thenm you should definetly watch this.
Advantages: Sam Neil, history. A film which has been filmed very well. No American flag waving! Disadvantages: The concept doesn't grab your attention. Its almost as if you need to find yourself in the cinema before you'll consider watching it.
the Southern Hemisphere and the United States of America isn’t. In the outback town of Parkes in the rural landscape of New South Wales there happens to be (thanks to the effort of the local mayor, we’re told) the largest radio telescope on that side of the planet. When the Apollo11 spacecraft is on the southern side of the planet it’ll be about of reach of all the radio telescopes in the USA and so the Americans did a deal with the Australians and Parkes was brought on board to help track the spaceship. The film picks up with the Australian Prime Minster paying attention to this fact for the first time. What has grabbed his attention is the fact that Parkes’ role has been upgraded and it will now be the telescope responsible for beaming the live TV footage of the Lunar walk to the world.
That’s all I’m ...

Advantages: Good plot. Good acting. Not American Disadvantages: None come to mind
Ironically, I missed “The Dish” when it was doing the rounds, as I was in Australia at the time!
So I was particularly pleased to obtain a DVD of it from www.play247.com in Jersey, which makes the purchase VAT-free (until HM Customs bother with small fry packets, that is) and post-free.
It’s going to be difficult to write about a DVD, without mentioning the main plot of the movie, so, be warned, there will follow a stark block capitals warning for those that don’t want to know the plot.
PLOT ALERT!!!!!!!
Based on a true story, “The Dish”* tells of the radio telescope located at Parkes, a sheep-farming town in Australia. It is July 1969, and the Apollo11 mission to land a man on the moon is about to get under way.
*”Why is it in the middle of a bloody sheep-paddock?”
It ...

Advantages: Thought Provoking, Informative Disadvantages: One Sided, Padded out too much
up the running time. Especially the "We have cleared the tower" episode that is told from the point of view of a small team of journalists. Filming the astronauts fishing for example, shows camaraderie but goes on too long.
The series does wet the appetite for more information. However, some of the episodes I found disappointing. I was really looking forward to the episode where they actually land on the moon, but there was far too much attention payed to the historical legacy of what they did and not enough of the actual flight. I guess I was looking for a little more technical detail and depth. I would have preferred this to have spanned two episodes and cut back on some of the others.
A good thing is that they didn't just leave it at Apollo11 or 13 and also included the other Apollo missions, the ones where hardly anyone remembers the names ...
