...The first scene of Apocalypto opens with a frenzied race through the jungle with the main character, Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), and fellow tribesmen Blunted, Flint Sky, Curl Nose, Smoke Frog and Cocoa Leaf, hunting down a Tapir. Having manged to kill the Tapir, the group set about dividing the meat into equal portions. When the Tapir’s ... ...beginning to its inevitable end, Apocalypto takes you on a mind-boggling journey that will make your heart ache and tie your feelings into knots. Apocalypto has been criticized as being excessively violent, but to this I say “rubbish”. I have seen more blood and violence in zombie movies than I have in Apocalypto. Moving on...
From the very first scene, the viewer enters into the world of the jungle people, the Indians who live outside the Maya ...

Advantages: Visually stunning, slick chase sequences Disadvantages: Far too gory, dodgy religious overtones, possible disservice to Mayan culture
...however, as a chase movie, Apocalypto is not really that original. But it was well told and is well set, with some good performances and thought-provoking themes so I would have to say that I liked it. 7/10 from me. And I resisted the urge to call this review “Mad Mayan”.

Advantages: Authentic. Excellent visually Disadvantages: Fast moving, foreign language
Apocalypto is an awe-inspiring film that keeps the viewer clinging to the edge of their seat. Based in the deep forests during the Mayan period, the visual aspects are quite something, especially the Mayan pyramids. The story by Mel Gibson and Farhad Safinia, focuses on Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), a passionate yet brave warrior. In a tribe where the members, cook, hunt, build and even poke the fun out of each other, he plays his part for the community ... ...villagers one day found themselves attacked savagely which turns their world upside down. Even women and children are killed when his village is attacked by the other tribe. After hiding his pregnant wife and young son in a cave, Jaguar goes on the run experiencing adventures that are quite horrific and exhilarting at the same time. The movie moves quickly from scene to scene which does makes the viewer not wanting to blink at any time.

Advantages: Action packed, Gripping, Disadvantages: Not for everyone.
Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (2006) may sound at first like a pretty dull and uninteresting film to watch but then you would be wrong this film is as potent and powerful as it is violent and brutal that can only be shown from the ancient Mayan civilization upon which it is set.
The whole film is spoken in the extinct Mayan language with English subtitles this gives it more depth and realism than if the people spoke in English as have many of films of ... ...the main characters hunting in the jungle for food to feed there small peaceful village where there is a development of the characters, Its then in the early hours of the next day that there peaceful world is shattered by a violent invading force who attack the village capturing as many of the villagers as they can while the villagers fight for there lives and freedom or attempt to escape.
The survivors are then tied up in groups as captive and ...

Advantages: Action-packed adventure that threatens to rip your heart out! Disadvantages: Maybe too violent for some.
It would seem that Mel Gibson is no longer flavour of the month in Hollywood land and this perhaps explains why his latest directorial effort has been so overlooked. Which is a shame, because it's a cracking movie. At first glance this film may not seem too appealing. Once again, like Passion of the Christ, the spoken language is not English and subtitles are used instead. This is not to everyone's taste but many successful films over the past few ... ...read and watch at the same time - maybe we're getting more sophisticated as an audience! Anyway, the film is very visual and the subtitles brief so it's easy to follow the story.
Like Passion before it and Braveheart the film has garnered a reputation for violence and the subject matter demands a certain amount of verisimilitude to be believable. For me, Gibson only oversteps the mark once - if like me you're not a big fan of face-mauling just look ...

DVD Description
Mel Gibson (BRAVEHEART, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST) tackles the downfall of Mayan civilization in his latest turn as writer/director. Filmed in Mexico with a cast of indigenous Americans speaking in the Yucatec dialect, this is a tale filled with contrasts. Muted greens and browns define the forest village while the city is awash in bright colours. The wealthy live in opulence, sporting elaborate jewellery, clothing, and hairdos while the villagers wear twig and bone ornaments. The villagers respect both life and nature, but the rulers of the great stone city condone violence in an effort to appease their gods. Gibson’s point is clear: the more "advanced" society is corrupt and unrepentant, while the more primitive Mayans have far greater faith and humanity. Gibson also drives home the recurring theme of rebirth with symbolism, including rain, pregnancy, and the arrival of Christianity. Beautifully filmed by Dean Semler and scored by James Horner, APOCALYPTO could benefit from some framing at its beginning to give the viewer a sense of time and place, but otherwise offers a rare glimpse into a lost world.
