“No matter who you are, no matter what you do for a living, there’s always somebody younger, faster and stronger coming right up behind you.”
The reason I wanted to see this film is because it was about American Football and LL Cool J was in it. Much the same as Deep Blue Sea, he was not a leading role, but he was even better with a side part.
The film was fantastic, it was about 3 hours long but I did not notice, in fact, I was disappointed that it finished so soon! Unfortunately, the movie did not do as well as it should have in Britain. Perhaps the great British public was put off by the fact that it was about American Football. You did not have to know anything about the game to enjoy the film. The soundtrack is also brilliant. The movie has a dramatic mood the whole way through and shows a lot of feelings from many different perspectives. It was good to see the views of the star quarterback, the coach the owner, the retiring player etc.
The camera work is fantastic, I would expect nothing less from Oliver Stone. The shots of the players on the field in a game were inspiring.
The actors put in excellent performances, especially Jaime Foxx as the new star player. One memorable section of the movie was when the second string quarterback is injured and he is sitting on the bench eating a packet of crisps. Of course, any movie with Al Pacino in it is going to be good. He had a huge influence on the movie as the representation of the ‘old’ NFL. Cameron Diaz makes a good job of playing the owner of the team. Dennis Quaid was typically good as the older player and LL Cool J was sparkling.
The one problem with this movie is that the NFL did not endorse it, thus there was no appearance of some of the NFL’s big teams and their players. I don’t blame them though, it can’t be good for a sport to endorse a movie that shows players taking drugs etc.
Overall, a brilliantly inspired movie from Stone that did not get the recognition it deserved in the UK. If you get the chance, go see it.

Advantages: Storming cinematography, strong pace, great acting Disadvantages: might not like it as its about American Football, script a littel lacking compared to the other parts of the film
